Even before I had a baby, I was a dog mom dealing with a living room full of puppy-related clutter. Now that I have a second child (this time, a human one), my house has quickly become one giant storage space with both baby gear and pet toys strewn about in every room. I knew I couldn’t live like this for very long, so I set off on a mission to find clever-but-pretty ways to hide things I didn’t want people to see—right in plain sight.

In my house, the clear plastic organizing bins are relegated to the insides of closets and drawers while the rest of the clutter is hidden so well, you wouldn’t even know it. An ottoman with a hollow middle is my living room’s best-kept secret for concealing plushies and baby blankets. If your current coffee table is just a coffee table, no secret storage compartment to speak of, you’re living in the past. While some styles end up looking very obvious, it’s nearly impossible to tell that this gorgeous, art deco table opens up to reveal ample storage space inside. It drives me bonkers where there are binkies littered all over the floor or stuck in every crevice of the couch, so giving them a “zone” means I’ll always know where to find one.

I love the idea of a floating drawer just from a design standpoint, but combine it with the functionality of disguised storage, and now I’m really in. These nix the need for end tables, adding more floor space, but without losing the surface I need to hold drinks, bottles, and snacks. The drawer is the perfect spot for storing the dog’s many tennis balls. (There used to be so many strewn about the dog bed that she would literally sleep on top of them.) Now that the balls are out of sight, they’re still not out of mind for my dog, who will calmly sit in front of the cabinet when she wants to play. And as a bonus, I don’t have to worry about the baby mistaking the dog’s toys for one of her own, and putting it in her mouth. Yikes!
