We’ve all had those sluggish, sleepy mornings, when we definitely need a little something to kick us into gear. But if you’re cutting back on coffee (or don’t particularly love the flavor), you may be looking for something else to put a little spring in your step.
Not to worry: These nutritionist-approved beverages can perk you up without relying on coffee (or even caffeine, in some cases). Add these to your morning routine for a fresh start to the day.
Beet Juice
If you’re looking for an energizing start to the morning, beet juice is a great pick. “Beet juice is rich in nitrates, which may improve blood flow and oxygen delivery,” says Melissa Prest, DCN, RDN, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “This can support stamina and mental alertness.”
Matcha Green Tea
For people who don’t mind caffeine, matcha green tea is a popular pick. “Matcha green tea contains some caffeine and L-theanine for calm alertness,” Prest says. “It’s also rich in antioxidants.”
Yerba Mate
For another kinder, gentler (but caffeinated) drink, Prest suggests yerba mate, which is a tea made from the leaves of a tree native to South America. “Yerba mate contains caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline, which are thought to provide mental alertness and physical stamina.”
Chicory Coffee
Chicory coffee, a New Orleans classic, isn’t actually coffee—it’s brewed from the roasted chicory root. “It’s caffeine-free and contains prebiotic fiber to support gut health,” Prest says. “It has anti-inflammatory properties. While you won’t feel a buzz, it’s a low-stimulant that may help you feel energized because of the gut support.”
If you have a ragweed allergy, skip the chicory coffee—it could trigger an allergic response.
Golden Milk
Golden milk has become a popular health-friendly drink, for its anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting benefits. “Golden milk with turmeric and black pepper has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help people with fatigue issues feel more alert over time.”
Pineapple-Celery-Lime Juice
For a fresh start to the day, Prest likes this tasty juice combination. “Pineapple-celery-lime juice can be refreshing, hydrating, and rich in enzymes, like bromelain, which may aid digestion.” Prest recommends opting for cold-pressed juices or making your own at home to avoid excess sugar.
Mushroom Coffee
Mushroom coffee has become a buzzy new morning drink option, offering a blend of mushrooms thought to provide significant nutritional benefits. “Mushroom coffee often blends traditional coffee with mushroom extracts like lion’s mane, chaga, reishi, and cordyceps,” Prest says. “Purported benefits include cognitive support and sustained energy without the jitteriness of caffeine.
Mushroom coffee sometimes contains actual coffee, so review the blend before you buy if you’re trying to avoid coffee. And watch for sugar or filler ingredients that make it less nutritious.
