5 Fall Jean Trends for 2024, According to Stylists

There’s no question that a good pair of jeans (or two or three) is an absolute wardrobe essential. Arguably one of the most versatile pieces of clothing there is, there’s no shortage of different ways to wear them—and certainly no shortage of different types of jeans available. To that point, it can definitely be tricky to keep up with the latest denim trends. (Are skinny jeans out, or did they come back in?)

“We’re starting to see jean trends change every few years, and even more quickly in some cases,” says Liz Lange, CEO and creative cirector of Figue. “In the mid to late 2010s, no one would leave the house without a pair of skinny jeans. Just a few years later there was an immediate pivot to baggier styles.”

It’s enough to make anyone’s head spin. The good news? With so many different styles, colors, washes, and even fabric composition, no matter what the hottest trends are in any given season, your body type, or where you want to wear them, there’s always a pair of jeans that fits the bill, says Lange.

When it comes to fall jeans, it’s usually about darker washes and texture, be that wax coating, embellishments, or prints, says Kelley Miglicco, owner of Shop the Chic Girl, who adds that there’s also still an emphasis on classic styles. No matter whether you’re looking to just add one new pair to your line-up or want to completely overhaul your denim collection, keep reading for more on five of the top fall jean trends of 2024. (And yes, we will answer that question about skinny jeans.)

1. Barrel Leg

Baggy or wide leg jeans have been popular for quite some time, says Lange. The latest iteration? Barrel or horseshoe leg. “These feature a distinctive cut that creates volume through the hips and thighs while tapering at the ankle. It’s a trendy silhouette that combines mom jeans, wide-leg jeans, and baggy jeans for a a fresh take on denim, perfect for those looking to make a statement,” says style expert and personal stylist Emily Loftiss. Since they’re fairly dramatic, keep your top more minimal, and pair with either a sneaker or platform shoe.

2. Straight Leg

Loftiss says super skinny jeans are still out, although there has been a shift toward slightly more fitted cuts. Take the straight leg, which she says is taking center stage this fall. The silhouette elongates the legs and is universally flattering, a foolproof pick for anyone and everyone.

They’re also perhaps the most versatile of any style. “Their adaptability allows for pairing with everything from tailored blazers to cozy sweaters, solidifying their status as a must-have in any wardrobe,” she says. Miglicco agrees, adding that their resurgence is also a nod to the styles popular in the ‘90s.

3. Crop Flares

Miglicco says this is an extremely popular style right now, thanks to the way it hugs the legs but kicks out at the ankle. “The fun thing about the crop flare is that it works well with a kitten heel, yet looks equally fabulous with a sneaker,” she says. Similarly, Loftiss notes that ankle-length jeans are ideal anytime you want to highlight your footwear, be it statement flats or boots.

4. Trouser Jeans

“Trouser jeans are the perfect blend of professional and casual, making them a staple for the modern wardrobe. These polished pieces are structured for the office while remaining versatile for after-hours fun,” says Loftiss, who recommends pairing them with a crisp blouse. Lange adds that these are a growing trend, and likes wearing them with a blazer and belt.

5. Embellished Denim

Embellished denim is all the rage right now,” says Miglicco. Whether it includes a rhinestone, a stud, or unique texture, there’s a major surge of over-the-top detailing that turns everyday denim into a full-on accessory. While this is a bold choice, there are lots of different ways to try this trend. For a slightly more subdued take, consider wax-coated jeans. Want to make a statement? Cut-outs are the way to go.
