Snacks are a convenient way to satisfy cravings, but they’re also an opportunity to get more nutrients—depending on what you’re snacking on. Snacks account for roughly 20 percent of the average American’s caloric intake, but nutritionally speaking, some packaged snacks aren’t the best for you. Many snacks are ultra-processed and high in sugar. While no foods are off limits, some are best enjoyed in moderation.
If your snacking habit is running up your grocery bill, Costco is a great place to shop for them. Not only does Costco offer unbeatable deals on grocery staples, the warehouse chain also carries plenty of healthy foods. So, what to look for? “Balanced snacks typically include a combination of protein, fiber, and healthy fats to provide sustained energy,” explains Patricia Bannan, RDN, founder of Wellness Intelligence. Here are the best Costco snacks—vetted by dietitians—to help you save money and maximize nutrients.
Chomps Original Beef Sticks
You may have seen Chomps circulating on social media—they’re individually wrapped beef sticks you can take on-the go-for a quick source of protein. But are they healthy? Registered dietitians say so. “Chomps beef sticks are a good option for a savory snack because they provide 10 grams of protein with less sodium and no sugar,” says Emily Villaseca, RDN, a Dallas-based dietitian. “I’d recommend pairing this with a piece of fruit or some veggies to make this snack more balanced and add additional fiber,” adds Eliza Whitaker, RDN, a dietitian in Greene, New York.
Kirkland Signature Organic Hummus
A high-protein bean dip or hummus paired with whole-grain crackers or veggie sticks is a nutritionally sound snack, Bannan notes. But you don’t have to make homemade dip every day for a wholesome snack. Costco has some ready-made options that are convenient for busy workdays. “These hummus singles feature organic chickpeas as the first ingredient, making them an excellent plant-based protein source,” Bannan explains. “For a balanced snack, pair [the hummus] with Simple Mills Almond Flour Crackers or sliced bell pepper strips to add crunch and additional nutrients.”
Kirkland Signature Organic Applesauce
Perfect for kids’ lunchboxes, Costco’s applesauce is a nutrient-rich snack the whole family can enjoy. Sold under the warehouse’s private label, Kirkland Signature, each pouch is under $0.60, making it one of the most affordable snacks at Costco. “A pouch of this organic applesauce provides convenient nutrition that’s an excellent source of vitamin C, and a good source of dietary fiber,” Newgent says, adding that you’ll need a protein source to go with it. “Pair it with a handful of nuts or Greek yogurt.”
Clif Bars
Clif Bars were designed to provide a quick energy source for athletes or those doing intense exercise, such as hiking. But if you need a substantial snack, they’re great for that purpose too, Bannan points out. “With 10 to11 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber per bar, Clif Bars provide considerable nutrition in a convenient package,” she explains, adding that they also provide vitamins and minerals. Since they’re higher in calories and sugar than a typical snack, consider them more of a miniature meal when substantial energy is needed, Bannan adds.
Solely Organic Fruit Jerky
Fruit jerky, or fruit leather, is essentially dried fruit—it’s not meant to rival beef jerky. Costco carries a 16-pack of organic fruit jerky, which is made from 100% fruit. “This naturally sweet snack helps you meet your daily fruit servings with a burst of antioxidants, all while satisfying your sweet tooth,” Newgent says. “For a balanced snack, pair this fruit jerky with sunflower seeds, crispy roasted chickpeas, yogurt, cottage cheese, or a nutty granola.”
Wonderful In-Shell Pistachio Nuts
Craving something savory? Don’t underestimate the nutritional benefits of nuts. Pistachios are one of the healthiest nuts because they provide complete plant-based protein and fiber, along with heart-healthy fats, Bannan notes. “This trio of nutrients keeps you feeling fuller for longer,” she adds. Costco carries individually packaged pistachios to pack in lunches or take on the go. “They’re a healthful snack on their own, but pistachios are also delightful paired with fresh fruit or tossed together in a trail mix with dried fruit and seeds,” Newgent adds.
Kirkland Signature Cashew Clusters
Nuts provide protein, fiber, and healthy fats—everything Bannan says is needed for a balanced snack. While Costco carries various types of nuts in bulk, these cashew clusters provide nuts and seeds, and can satisfy both sweet and salty cravings. “Nuts and seeds are a great source of heart healthy fats, and will give you some protein and fiber as well,” Villaseca says. “These are a satisfying snack to rotate in, but keep an eye on portion size for the sake of sugar, total fat, and overall calories.”
SunChips Whole Grain Snacks
Fruits and nuts are great, but what about Costco snacks for when you want something a little more indulgent? “You don’t need to buy chips marketed as ‘high-protein chips’ when SunChips are available,” Villaseca says. Fortunately, Costco carries a 30-count variety pack. “As far as chips go, Sun Chips offer about 3 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber, while still giving you the crunch and saltiness of a regular chip,” Villaseca says. “SunChips are the best of both worlds, in my opinion.”
Chobani Complete Lowfat Greek Yogurt Drinks
Greek yogurt is often dubbed the healthiest yogurt type, but the tart taste isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. These yogurt drinks are a staple in my fridge for a quick protein source, but the best part is that they taste great—you wouldn’t know they’re made with Greek yogurt. “Drinkable yogurts are a great way to get more protein into your diet on the go,” Villaseca says. She also likes that they provide 20 grams of protein without added sugar. Pair them with a piece of fruit for some extra fiber, since they only contain one gram of fiber each.
TRUBAR Plant-Based Protein Bars
When we spoke to dietitians about what to look for in a balanced snack, they all echoed the same thing—it should provide protein. But for vegans and vegetarians, this is easier said than done, since many high-protein snacks contain animal products. For anyone looking to eat more plants, plant-based TRUBARs provide both protein and fiber with ingredients like grains and nuts, Whitaker notes. “These bars contain 12 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber, which will help leave you fuller,” she explains. “They also come in a variety of flavors, and they’re gluten-free.”
