Australian Open 2024 results: Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid win first-round matches in men’s wheelchair singles

Britain’s Alfie Hewett began his Australian Open men’s wheelchair singles title defence with victory over Japan’s Takashi Sanada.

The 26-year-old won 6-1 7-5 and will play Alexander Cataldo of Chile in the quarter-finals.

British fourth seed Gordon Reid also won on Tuesday, comfortably beating Dutch player Maikel Scheffers 6-1 6-2.

Andy Lapthorne won in the first round of the quad wheelchair singles, but fellow Briton Greg Slade lost.

Lapthorne gained a 6-4 7-6 (7-1) success over Diego Perez of Chile and Slade, who was given a wildcard to appear in the tournament, lost 6-3 7-6 (7-3) to Chile’s Francisco Cayulef.

In the women’s wheelchair singles, Britain’s Lucy Shuker has a tough task as she takes on Dutch top seed Diede de Groot, a winner of all four Grand Slam tournaments in 2023.

Hewett and Reid are four-time defending champions in the doubles and begin their title defence on Wednesday.

The pair are in different halves of the singles draw and could meet in the final.

Reid, 32, will face Tom Egberink, another Dutch opponent, in the quarter-finals.
