Benedict Cumberbatch is calling out the movie industry for a surprising reason!

The 49-year-old actor was a guest on the Ruthie’s Table podcast on the Tuesday (July 22) episode.

While on the podcast, Benedict talked about how he prepared for his role in the Marvel movie Dr. Strange – and why he thinks it was “grossly wasteful.”

According to Benedict, he had to follow a strict diet in order to undergo his major transformation to play the lead role in Dr. Strange. Specifically, he mentioned having to eat five meals a day in order to reach his calorie goals, which included foods like boiled eggs, almonds, and cheese.

“The exercise is great, and the end result is that you feel strong and you feel confident. You hold yourself better. You have a stamina through the exercise and the food that makes you last through the gig. But it is horrific,” Benedict said, noting that he does understand that having to get fit for roles is part of his job. “I don’t like it personally. I think it’s horrific, eating beyond your appetite.”

The actor went on to question the sustainability aspect of the industry, questioning how many people could have been fed with the massive amounts of food he ate.

“Think about set builds that aren’t recycled, think about transport, think about food, think about housing, but also light and energy. The amount of wattage you need to create daylight and consistent light in a studio environment. It’s a lot of energy,” Benedict said.

He acknowledged that trying to push for more sustainable practices can be met with backlash, but suggested that film sets make changes like using reusable water bottles on film sets.
