Part of living in New York City is thinking about moving out of New York City. Each month, we’ll round up the best listings within commuting-ish distance, places where entire houses go for the cost of a “junior one-bedroom” (or less), but you’ll have to fix your own toilet.

We’re going to Connecticut!

$849,000: 2-bedroom, 3-bath

One of two houses in this listing, the farmhouse features original details like the exposed brick in this listing photo.

The screened-in porch in this listing photo is perfect for summer dinners in this house that’s a quick drive to Minnewaska State Park.

One property, two houses (and two porches). The 1930s-built farmhouse still has a lot of its original charm with wooden beams and wide-plank floors, while the newer home, built in 2020, has a really dreamy window bed and a wide-open deck. Split the price with a friend.

How do I get back to the city?

It’s a two-hour drive, or you can take a bus from nearby Kingston.

So what do I do if I live there?

Go hiking in Minnewaska State Park and stop at Mountain Brauhaus for a brew on the way back.

$389,000: 2-bedroom, 1-bath

This is basically all the listing photos have to offer of this two-bedroom cabin, but let’s assume you’re going to renovate anyways.

The house is close to the Long Island Sound, as featured in this listing photo.

A tiny cabin on the Long Island Sound is simply described as “Charming cottage in a beach community!” Most of the listing photos are of the beach, but what else do you really need? There’s a roof and windows, and I think we can safely assume everything will need to be renovated, but it’s cheaper than other houses in the area.

How do I get back to the city?

Take the LIRR to Riverhead, and then it’s just a ten-minute cab home.

So what do I do if I live there?

Go swimming. Renovate your house.

$949,000: 4-bedroom, 3-bath

The house featured in this listing photo was built by the “first lawyer” of Woodbury and has been standing since 1760.

The wide-plank floors in the living room of this listing photo have been refinished as part of a recent renovation.

Per the listing, this house was built in 1760 by “the first lawyer” of Woodbury, so maybe it will inspire you to achieve similar levels of greatness. You’ll have to change out some of the wallpaper, but it’s been recently renovated, which means new plumbing and refinished wood floors. It’s a bit expensive compared to similar-size listings that recently sold in the area, but those houses were not built by the first lawyer of Woodbury.

How do I get back to the city?

It’s just over a two-hour drive.

So what do I do if I live there?

Grab lunch at El Camion taco truck and then walk around what Reader’s Digest crowned the most charming town in the state.

$695,000: 3-bedroom, 2-bath

The cozy interiors of this house as shown in this listing photo include antique window shutters and exposed wood beams.

It’s almost summer, so it’s worth considering a house with a pool, as shown in this listing photo, that you never have to leave.

This house doesn’t look like much from the outside (maybe why it’s well priced for the area?), but the interiors are incredibly charming, with exposed beams, antique window shutters, and vaulted ceilings in the bedrooms. Not to mention the huge backyard and pool.

How do I get back to the city?

It’s just under a three-hour drive.

So what do I do if I live there?

You won’t have to leave your house ever again because you have a pool.
