Bristol and Brighton most expensive cities outside London

Brighton and Bristol are the most expensive cities outside the capital based on both rental and house prices.

They are also the costliest based on the average yearly electricity bill and the cost of a monthly bus pass.

Both Bristol and Brighton are known for having vibrant cultural, music and arts scenes, with Bristol being the UK’s first ‘cycling city’ and Brighton having a high LGBT population.

Brighton has the highest house prices outside London, at £420,181 on average. Meanwhile Bristol is the most expensive city in which to rent outside of London, at an average of £1750.6 per month.

At the other end of the spectrum three of the most affordable cities in the study are in the North East, comprising Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Newcastle. However, all three rank lowly in terms of disposable income and wages.

Northern Irish cities ranked high for affordability, especially for rent and buying costs. Belfast had the fifth cheapest property prices, at £171,276; and Derry the fourth cheapest, at £164,483.
