While speaking with The Sunday Times, Cara told the interview that the day they first met, which was in 2001, she got drunk.
“You know I got drunk that day,” she revealed. “I was eight, what a crazy age to get drunk.”
Also in the interview, Cara shared how she felt about going out all the time.
“I used to think drugs and alcohol helped me cope … but they didn’t, they kept me sad and super depressed,” she said. “I feel like I’ve got my power back and I’m not being controlled by other things.”
As for her house fire earlier this year, Cara said it would still be affecting her if she had not been sober.
“It sucks but everyone was safe and, like anything, if I’d not been sober I would still be reeling over that,” the Carnival Row actress stated.
However, after seeing paparazzi photos after 2022 Burning Man, that helped encourage her to get sober, and she’s glad she did, as she wouldn’t have opportunities today if she wasn’t.
“Listen, I signed up for this, this is my job, it’s what I do. But without that would I be sober now? I would have never been Sally Bowles in the West End, I’m super proud of that,” Cara said, referring to her role in Cabaret earlier this year before it’s Broadway transfer.
Cara recently reflected and shared an empowering message for others who may be struggling with addiction.
