If you’ve recently purchased cucumbers, you might want to read this. Cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers, Inc. and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc. have been voluntarily recalled due to potential contamination with Salmonella Montevideo bacteria. The recall comes in response to a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella infections.
So far, 26 people from 15 states have been infected with Salmonella Montevideo in connection with this outbreak, and nine people have been hospitalized as a result. States with cases of reported illness include:
- Alabama
- California
- Colorado
- Florida
- Illinois
- Kansas
- Kentucky
- Michigan
- North Carolina
- New York
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Virginia
The impacted cucumbers, sold individually and in packages of multiple, were distributed between April 29 and May 19, 2025, and likely don’t have identifying packaging. If you suspect cucumbers you purchased came from Bedner Growers, or if you’re unsure, throw them out. It’s also a good idea to sanitize any surfaces the cucumbers may have touched, like your refrigerator drawer or kitchen countertop.
The FDA recommends that consumers eating out at restaurants over the next week ask if the cucumbers used at the establishment were from Bedner Growers or Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc. to prevent illness, as the cucumbers were distributed to both restaurant and retail locations.
If you suspect you or someone you know has symptoms of a Salmonella infection, contact a healthcare provider. According to the FDA, illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food, with symptoms lasting four to seven days. Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea, and more severe illness may occur in small children, elderly people, and those with a weakened immune system.
