Halle Barry Would Play Catwoman Again On One Condition

Last month was the 20th anniversary of Catwoman, a spin-off from the Batman films starring Halle Berry in the title role. Although the film references Michelle Pfeiffer’s Selina Kyle from Batman Returns, Berry’s Catwoman was Patience Phillips, and the story had nothing to do with Gotham City or Batman. At the time of its release, Catwoman was a flop and it was also denigrated by critics. But now, Berry is more forcefully defending her film, and she’s willing to reprise her role.

Via Variety, Berry was a guest on The Tonight Show, where she was asked by host Jimmy Fallon if she would play Catwoman again. “Maybe if I could direct it,” replied Berry, who previously helmed the sports drama Bruised for Netflix in 2020. Earlier in the interview, Berry spoke about Catwoman finding a new audience that seems to have a greater appreciation for it.

“I loved [Catwoman],” said Berry. “It got panned. The critics said it sucked balls. And balls aren’t that bad… What I’m happy about is that the children have found it now on the internet, and they love it… So, it’s so vindicating. Because now they’re saying it’s cool and what the heck was everybody’s problem with it.”

Catwoman received four Razzie Awards in 2005, including Worst Picture and Worst Actress for Berry. Unlike previous winners for that award, Berry showed up in person to claim the Razzie and brought her Oscar for Best Actress with her. However, Berry has continued to voice her support for Catwoman and she recently shared these photos on her Instagram account when the film hit its 20th anniversary in July.

The cats in Berry’s pics were recently adopted by the actress when they wandered into her backyard. Berry is currently starring in The Union on Netflix, and her next film, Never Let Go, hits theaters on September 20.
