Halsey has revealed her upcoming album will be a concept album about her life and career called “The Great Impersonator.” The popstar shared a series of video clips — from behind-the-scenes glimpses of her in-studio to cuts of her in David Bowie and Britney Spears cosplay — with an introspective narration that starts with her confessing, “I really thought this album would be the last one I ever made.”
Earlier this year, Halsey released her first single of the album cycle, an emotional tune called “The End.” It was with this song that Halsey shared she was “lucky to be alive” after being diagnosed with Lupus SLE (an autoimmune disease that can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, brain and other organs, per the National Library of Medicine) and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder in 2022.
“I really thought this album would be the last one I ever made,” Halsey says in the trailer for “The Great Impersonator.”
“When you get sick like that, you start thinking about ways it could have all been different. What if this isn’t how it all went down? 18-year-old Ashley becomes Halsey in 2014. What if I debuted in the early 2000s? The ’90s? The ’80s? The ’70s?”
As Halsey contemplates these alternate realities, clips of her in iconic apparel from these musical eras — pulling inspiration from Bowie, Spears and more — flash across the screen with songs from the album used as a soundtrack. Halsey’s video for the already released and Spears-interpolating “Lucky” is also included.
“Am I still Halsey every time, in every timeline? Do I still get sick? Do I become a mom? Am I happy? Lonely? Have I done enough? Have I told the truth? I spent half my life being someone else. I never stopped to ask myself: If it all ended right now, is this the person you’d be proud to leave behind? Is it even you?”
Halsey hasn’t announced a release date yet, but their website teases that it’s coming in 2024.
