James Cameron Inks Deal With Meta For Meta Quest Content

James Cameron is teaming up with tech giant Meta to bring more premium content to its Meta Quest mixed reality headsets.

The Avatar, Terminator and Titanic director’s Lightstorm Vision has cut a deal with Meta to “scale the creation of world-class 3D entertainment experiences spanning live sports and concerts, feature films, and TV series featuring big-name IP on Meta Quest,” the tech giant says.

Exactly what IP they have in mind is unclear for now, though Cameron’s relationships with the studios and his own IP could give a glimpse into what is possible.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, though it spans multiple years and ensure that Meta Quest will be the exclusive MR platform used by Lightstorm Vision.

“Fantastic news … Announcing a comprehensive, multi-year partnership with Meta to revolutionize ALL visual media,” says Cameron in a statement. “Recently, Boz [Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth] showed me some of Meta’s advanced tech. I was amazed by its transformational potential and power, and what it means for content creators globally. I’m convinced we’re at a true, historic inflection point. Navigating that future with Meta will ensure ALL of us have the tools to create, experience, and enjoy new and mind-blowing forms of media.”

To Cameron’s point, Meta says that the goal of the partnership is to “make 3D production tools more accessible across the broader entertainment industry.”

“In addition to co-producing original content, we’ll leverage Lightstorm Vision’s cutting-edge technology and production techniques to revolutionize the creation of stereoscopic media,” the company added in a blog post.

Cameron, of course, has been creating 3D content for decades, culminating with Avatar, which propelled the technology forward. Headsets like the Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro enable more accessible 3D content in the home, without the need to go to a theater or put on single-use glasses.

The director, of course, is also known to embrace new technologies to help develop his filmmaking. Earlier this year he joined the board of directors of Stability AI, the firm that developed the Stable Diffusion text-to-image generative AI model, an image- and video-focused model that is among those being closely watched by many in Hollywood, particularly in the visual effects industry.
