James Gunn announced on Threads that “Superman” is getting closer to the end of filming after the cast and crew wrapped a six-week shoot in Cleveland. The writer-director stressed that “we are not done shooting” and there’s “still a couple weeks left,” adding: “It’s a long shoot…but we’re getting close!!” Prior to Cleveland, Gunn and his “Superman” cast kicked off production in Atlanta.
“Cleveland — today we are leaving you after six amazing weeks of shooting,” Gunn posted. “From the moment we first came here on a scout a tad less than a year ago and Terminal Tower was lit up with the colors of Superman, I knew you were a special place. I would walk down your streets and someone would stop me and tell me how grateful they were we were shooting in their city — not once, not twice, but dozens of times.”
Gunn went on to praise the film’s background actors in Cleveland, noting they “were always so fun and funny and they clapped after takes, something that reminded us Hollywood cynics why we make movies in the first place.”
“The pride you feel in being where Jerry [Siegel] and Joe [Shuster] first created Superman was invigorating,” Gunn added. “You exemplify his spirit. But just as much it’s the pride you have in your community, your hometown, your radio stations and restaurants and gathering places that touched me.”
Gunn concluded, “Every city would be so lucky to have people that loved their city as much as you. You simply couldn’t have been more wonderful, kind, or accommodating to me and our performers and crew. Thank you a thousand times over for being our friends and partners on this film. Much love to you all.”
While originally titled “Superman: Legacy,” Gunn’s upcoming comic book tentpole was retitled earlier this year to just “Superman.” The film is designed to kick off the new DC Universe under the leadership of Gunn and his DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran. Starring in the title role is David Corenswet, the 30-year-old actor best known for his supporting roles in two Ryan Murphy-created Netflix series, “The Politician” and “Hollywood.” Corenswet’s most notable film role prior to “Superman” was “Pearl,” the Ti West-directed horror movie led by Mia Goth.
Gunn’s “Superman” cast also includes “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, plus Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl) and more.
“Superman” is set to open in theaters on July 11, 2025, from Warner Bros.
