Labour meets with developer Berkeley Group

Berkeley Group has met with Labour’s new Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Housing Secretary Angela Rayner.

The pair visited the group’s Oval Village brownfield development soon after winning the General Election – in a clear sign that the pair are keen to work with developers to rapidly increase housing supply.

Rob Perrins, Berkeley Group chief executive, said: “We’re hugely encouraged to see the clear priority and focus on housing delivery as part of the government’s mission for growth.

“Today’s announcements are a very positive start, and we will continue to work closely with Government to help unlock the potential of brownfield regeneration sites to deliver good green homes, both affordable and private. Reviving urban land has a vital role to play in driving the sustainable growth and productivity our country needs.”

Labour has already reinstated housing targets and lifted a ban on onshore wind farms.

The party is looking to review green belt boundaries to establish a new category called ‘grey belt’, meaning poor quality areas of what’s currently defined as green belt.

It is also looking to recruit more planning officers to speed up the process.
