Leighton Meester says she now gets recognized by Gossip Girl fans who weren’t even alive when the show initially aired years ago.
While promoting her new series Good Cop/Bad Cop, the actress was asked by Access Hollywood what it’s like seeing younger generations fall in love with the hit show, which aired for six seasons from 2007-23. Meester played Blair Waldorf, the Upper East Side’s Queen Bee.
“Now people are like, ‘It’s vintage,’” she said. “Or sometimes I’m like, ‘You weren’t born yet when we started.’ There’s a lot of that. Or even when we wrapped. There’s people who are just discovering it.”
“I do think it’s kind of incredible because of a time and place,” Meester added about why she thinks the show continues to find new audiences. “There was no social media. I don’t even think it was happening — there was no such thing as that when we started, really … I think people are very nostalgic for that kind of thing because … it’s just comfort for people. Whether they’ve seen it once or they want to try it for the first time.”
Gossip Girl centers on a group of wealthy teenagers through their day-to-day scandalous lives as Manhattans Elite, and how they betray each other for each other’s gain. The show also starred Blake Lively, Penn Badgley, Ed Westwick, Chace Crawford, Kelly Rutherford, Matthew Settle, Jessica Szohr and Taylor Momsen.
Elsewhere during her interview with Access, Meester — who is set to join her husband Adam Brody in season two of Nobody Wants This — was asked if she would ever step back into the role of Blair for a potential Gossip Girl reboot. She responded, “Never say never, so you never know.”
A revival of the show featuring a new cast aired on HBO Max from 2021-23, but it was canceled after two seasons.
