LYNDEN — The Lions soccer team improved to 2-1-1 after a 5-0 blowout over Lynden Christian on Thursday, Sept. 14.
Lynden has proved they are capable of scoring goals, with 19 combined in their first four games. Where they have struggled is on defense, allowing 12 goals in their first three games combined.
Against LC, they got the shut out and that is what Lynden head coach Clark Bourgault was most proud of.
“The shut out is what I am happiest about, we have been struggling defensively, so as a confidence building block, this helps,” Bougault said.
The Lions were relentless when they were on the offense. Unofficially, they attempted 20 shots with 13 on goal, including their five goals.

Defensively they were just as impressive, only allowing a total of five shots from LC. Only two of the LC shot attempts were on goal. With this loss, LC drops to 0-5 on the season.
Mallary Villars was the offensive MVP of the game, recording a hat-trick with three straight goals in the second half.
Defensively, Lynden’s Miley Tjoelker, Miranda Basart and Annabelle Uyttewaal were the standouts.
Lynden opened scoring in the 33rd minute of the game with an empty net goal by Sophomore Rilanna Newcomb. LC’s goalie Jessa Wynstra left the box to go smother a ball but was too late and collided with her teammate, leaving the goal open for Newcomb’s easy shot.
The game went into halftime and it was a manageable deficit for LC only down 1-0. Following the halftime break, the game quickly unraveled.
In the 50th minute, Evelyn Saldivar sent a cross to Faith VanBrocklin for a goal from a couple of yards out. Lynden went up 2-0 and two minutes later, they went up 3-0 after Villars’s first goal.
Villars would score another goal in the 68th minute, sending a laser into the back left corner just outside Wynstra’s reach.

Her final goal came in the final minutes of the game. She was one-on-one with Wynstra and crosser her over to knock in the ending blow. Lynden secured the 5-0 blowout victory.
Bourgault said their main focus going forward is going to be defensive intensity.
“Two victories in a row is good and the shutout is something this team needed to feel good about,” Bourgault said.
Lynden plays again on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Meridian.
