Natalie Morales Joins ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ for Season 21

Natalie Morales — who guest starred on “Grey’s Anatomy” last season — has officially joined the recurring cast of the long-running ABC drama for Season 21. In Season 20, Morales began playing Dr. Monica Beltran, a new pediatric surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Morales will first appear in the second episode of the season, and will be in a guaranteed six episodes — with an option for more.

At the hospital in Season 20, Monica was all business, and was eventually convinced to mentor Dr. Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) in his quest to get a pediatric fellowship. In her personal life, Monica said she was going throught a messy divorce, but also appeared to be a potential love interest for both Winston (Anthony Hill) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) in what would be a disastrous love triangle, should it happen.

The official description of the character from ABC reads thusly: “Morales plays Dr. Beltran, a pediatric surgeon who is at the top of her game and knows it. She’s beloved in her field for her great pragmatism and levelheadedness, and she has a savvy bedside manner with both her little patients as well as their parents. But Dr. Beltran doesn’t always see eye to eye with her colleagues and will let nothing get in the way of helping her kids.”

On television, Morales has appeared on “The Morning Show,” “Dead to Me,” “Abby” (as the title character), “The Newsroom,” “Girls,” and “Bojack Horseman,” among many others. In movies, has co-starred in such films as “No Hard Feelings,” “Self-Reliance” and “My Dead Friend Zoe.” She is repped by Bleeker Street Entertainment.

In the upcoming season of the Shonda Rhimes-created show, “Grey’s Anatomy” star Ellen Pompeo will be returning to her role as Meredith Grey for at least seven episodes, Variety has reported. Season 21 will premiere on ABC on Sept. 26.
