Oxford the most expensive place to rent alone

Solo renters in Oxford have to fork out £1,050 for a one-bedroom home, ranking it as the most expensive area to rent in the UK outside of London, analysis from Hiatt Hardware shows.

The city is home to one of the UK’s most prestigious universities and has direct transport links to London, both of which play a large role in rental demand.

Epsom and Ewell ranks second among the UK’s least affordable areas for solo renters, costing £1,048 per month for a one-bedroom unit.

This town provides a balance between urban and rural living, as its proximity to London makes it a desirable location for both commuters and city-lovers.

Oxford’s rival Cambridge is the UK’s third most expensive area to live in alone in the UK, costing £1000 per month for a one-bedroom home.

The area is known for its top-class university, while rents are high partially owing to the city’s strict planning regulations.

At the other end of the spectrum, Burnley is the most affordable area for solo renters in the UK, costing a monthly average of £370 for a one-bedroom home.

Meanwhile Croydon is seen as the best area to rent alone in London due to its affordability.
