Getty ImagesReal Madrid star Jude Bellingham has learned how many games he will miss through suspension for being red carded in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Osasuna.
Madrid went 1-0 up through Kylian Mbappe inside quarter of an hour at El Sadar. Around 25 minutes later, however, Bellingham was dismissed after the referee understood him to have said “fuck y*u” in his direction.
Post-match, Bellingham protested his innocence and claimed that he had instead said “f*ck off” as did head coach Carlo Ancelotti when speaking to the press before Bellingham.
“We started well and finished well with one less. The red card with Jude, I don’t think he understood him well. He tells him to ‘f*ck off’, not ‘f*ck you’ [in English],” Ancelotti stated.
Then in front of microphones in the mixed zone, Bellingham shed his own light on the incident.
“It’s clear that a mistake has been made, there has been a communication error,” Bellingham insisted.
“I don’t want to say what I said again, but it’s more like ‘joder’ (a Spanish phrased often said to mean ‘f*ck’), and I want everyone to know that I didn’t mean to put the team in a situation to leave them with ten men.
“If you review the video you can see that it is not the same as what the [referee’s] minutes say. I hope that the Federation takes it into account. I haven’t insulted anyone, you can see it clearly in the video.
“I don’t even say it directly to the referee, I say it to myself. It was a lack of understanding, a clear mistake by the referee,” the number 5 reiterated.
As national debate in Spain rages on the offensiveness of each ‘F word’ term and what Bellingham actually said, the Englishman has been suspended for two matches as reported by numerous outlets including MARCA.
While Bellingham can obviously play Wednesday’s Champions League playoffs second leg against Manchester City in the Bernabeu, he’ll miss Sunday’s vital La Liga clash with Girona and Real Betis the following weekend.
Madrid, which is currently at loggerheads with Spanish referees and La Liga president Javier Tebas, is almost certain to appeal the suspension and badly needs Bellingham at a time it has ceded title race leadership to bitter rival FC Barcelona.
