The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) has made a groundbreaking move by subscribing to the Green Electricity Tariff (GET), a transformative initiative introduced by the Malaysian Government and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia’s premier electricity utility company.

This subscription ensures that the Centre will be powered by renewable electricity.

The GET Programme aims to enable electricity consumers throughout Malaysia to diminish their carbon emissions from electricity usage. Consequently, the Centre will now utilize renewable energy for its top-tier facilities and events, primarily sourced from Malaysia’s Large-Scale Solar (LSS) Programme and TNB’s hydropower and renewable energy plants.

Remarkably, KLCC is the inaugural business events venue in Malaysia to receive approval for this green initiative. This move is a significant leap towards the Centre’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

The Centre’s Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) objectives align with the 12th Malaysia Plan – Advancing Sustainability, the Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE) pledge, and the ASM Global Acts, a CSR programme by ASM Global.

John Burke, the General Manager of KLCC, expressed, “Our aim was to transition at least 25% of our energy to renewable sources by 2030. However, the GET subscription has expedited this process. This achievement underscores our unwavering commitment to ESG practices and our aspiration to lead in sustainable business events.”

He further emphasized the benefits for event planners, stating, “Our GET subscription ensures that events at the Centre have a reduced environmental impact, bolstering our reputation as a top choice for both local and international events.”

Sustainability remains at the heart of KLCC’s operations. With a dedicated Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Taskforce, the Centre has embarked on numerous eco-friendly initiatives, including waste reduction, recycling, food waste minimization, sustainable sourcing, and even a hydroponic farm on its rooftop.

In partnership with the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Business Events Alliance (KLCCBEA), efforts are underway to transform the entire Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) precinct into an eco-friendly destination. The iconic KLCC precinct boasts the world’s tallest twin towers, luxury hotels, a shopping mall, and a verdant park.

These endeavors aim to position the Centre as a hub for green events, attract global sustainability-centric meetings to Malaysia, and generate lasting positive impacts in harmony with the Malaysian Government’s dedication to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
