Throughout the investigation of the University of Idaho student murders, authorities have played their hand as close to the chest as possible. But as the trial approaches, we’re seeing more and more. And the more evidence that comes out, the worse it looks for Bryan Kohberger.
This latest blow? The defendant bought a ski mask… before a tall, masked man murdered Kaylee Goncalves, Maddie Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin.
Surviving roommate Dylan Mortensen told police when she stepped out of her room to see what all the noise was that night, she saw a man in a mask walking toward her (the backdoor of the house was behind her). There’s already been a lot of fuss over the small amount of the killer’s face she could see — and whether the jury will match Kohberger to her “bushy eyebrows” description. But this latest is about the mask. Here’s what the roommate claims she saw:
Scary, right? The idea of seeing a man in your home late at night wearing that? Well, it’s scary for Kohberger now.

Latah County District Attorney Bill Thompson filed a motion to introduce a receipt into evidence. It turns out Kohberger bought a mask matching that description a few months before the murders — a full-face ski mask, or balaclava. Thompson writes:
“The relevance of this information is that Bryan Kohberger purchased a black balaclava from Dick’s Sporting Goods on January 10, 2022. This mask is the same type of mask described by [the surviving roommate] that she witnessed worn by a male in the residence on November 13, 2022.”
Ten months isn’t right before… But it’s close enough, certainly if the photos Dick’s provides of the mask he bought match the sketch precisely enough.
Yet another piece of evidence for the mountain against Kohberger…
