Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson to remain detained in Greenland | Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

The anti-whaling activist Paul Watson is to remain in detention in Greenland while Denmark decides whether to extradite him to Japan, a court in the Danish autonomous territory has ruled.

Watson, 73, founder of the Sea Shepherd conservationist group and the Captain Paul Watson Foundation, was arrested when his ship docked at the port of Nuuk on 21 July.

Watson, who is a US-Canadian national, will remain in detention until 5 September, police in Greenland said in a statement, adding that he had appealed against the Nuuk court’s decision.

Japan issued an international arrest warrant for Watson more than a decade ago. He is accused of breaking into a Japanese vessel in the Southern Ocean in 2010, obstructing its business and causing injury as well as property damage.

Supporters of Watson have launched a campaign for his release, enlisting the support of politicians and celebrities, including the French president, Emmanuel Macron, and the Irish actor Pierce Brosnan among others.
