This Kitchen ‘Essential’ Is David Chang-Approved

I remember the first time I saw David Chang on TV. He had just released his Netflix docuseries, Ugly Delicious, and my dad was watching it in the living room. I immediately fell in love with the show, and sank into the couch next to my dad. We binged the whole thing in one sitting, discussing the various dishes Chang tried around the world, like Viet-Cajun crawfish and fried chicken with caviar. It inspired me to look at food in a different way, and that curiosity blossomed into my passion for cooking now.

When I moved into my tiny New York City apartment, I had very limited kitchen space, and I knew I needed to consult my favorite celebrity chef about what to expend it on. I’m wary of micoplastics, so the less nonstick coating is in my kitchen, the better. I found a recent clip from his podcast, The Dave Chang Show, where he shared a list of his must-have kitchen essentials — and after listening to this snippet, a non-toxic, stainless steel stockpot went right to the top of my shopping list.

In his list of kitchen essentials, David Chang gave a stainless steel pot the “no. 1” spot. His co-host Chris Yang asked who needs one in their kitchen, and Chang responded, “people that cook.” I, being someone who cooks, sought out to find a favorite pot of other people who cook, and came across the Ecolution Stainless Steel Stockpot, a popular option with over 3,000 five-star ratings from Amazon shoppers.

“You need a pot to boil water in, where you can put pasta, like spaghetti,” said Chang, emphasizing the “utilitarian” need for this cookware. Not to brag, but this Ecolution stainless steel pot can do that and then some, including boiling, braising, and slow-cooking. It comes in a range of sizes, from 1 to 24 quarts, but my ideal size is the 8-quart option for boiling pasta and simmering large batches of soup. It even comes with a matching tempered glass lid, and surprisingly, you can put both pieces in the dishwasher for effortless cleanup.

You may be wondering, why stainless steel? Well, David Chang feels very passionate about using a stainless steel stockpot, and not a nonstick one. “You’re trying to bring it to a boil, and that temperature is going to ruin your nonstick,” he said. When you expose nonstick to high temperatures, the coating wears down, releasing harmful toxins and leaching microplastics into your food. Unlike their nonstick counterparts, stainless steel pots are non-toxic, designed to endure high heat, and are built to last. This durable Ecolution pot has an encapsulated aluminum base which allows for quick and even heat distribution. It can even go in the oven!

If the recommendation from my favorite world-renowned chef weren’t enough, thousands of Amazon shoppers can also attest that this stainless steel pot is a staple in their kitchen. One shopper concisely said, “big and durable, no complaints.” Another customer, who worked in a restaurant and is “picky” about pans, said this pot is “a great size, easy to clean, well-made, has a thick bottom, and holds heat well.” A third reviewer was initially nervous the handles would get too hot, but found that they actually “stayed perfectly cool,” making it “easy to move the pot back and forth off the heat to maintain the right temperature.”

Chef David Chang says if you’re a person who cooks, you need a stainless steel pot in your kitchen. Grab the versatile 8-quart Ecolution Stainless Steel Stockpot today while it’s on sale for $25 at Amazon.
