What Is Tubing Mascara?

What Is Tubing Mascara?

When it comes to eyelashes, I’m not exactly genetically blessed. The lashes themselves are fine—standard, even—but their ability to hold a curl is downright abysmal. So much so that in order to keep even the slightest swoop, I have to use a heated curler, a traditional lash curler, a Japanese lash primer, and a tubing mascara.

Make no mistake, it’s a very involved routine—and one most people can probably do without. But for anyone in search of a flake- and clump-free, curl-holding, lash-lengthening mascara, I always recommend one takeaway from my routine: a great tubing formula. But what makes a tubing mascara so special? Ahead, I’m breaking down everything you need to know about my mascara of choice.

What is tubing mascara?

Tubing mascara is simply mascara that has polymers (something that regular mascaras do not). You can see them in the ingredient list as polyvinylpyrrolidone. Polymers act differently in your mascara formula by creating a kind of film around your lashes. While traditional mascaras coat the lashes in layers of pigment, tubing mascaras contain polymers that wrap around each individual lash like a tube. The water-resistant tubes are virtually smudge-proof—a major benefit over traditional formulas—though they’re far less buildable than your run-of-the-mill mascara.

What are the benefits of tubing mascara?

Finding your right mascara ultimately comes down to personal preference. Tubing mascaras provide top-tier lifting and lengthening effects, while separating and defining each individual lash. They also offer less flaking and smudging than traditional formulas, since they don’t contain the usual oils and waxes that can weigh down lashes. The unique formula also makes tubing mascaras the better option in terms of longevity. Finally, tubing mascaras are far easier to remove—and more satisfying. Simply saturate a cotton pad with some warm water and gently press against the lashes for 30 seconds before wiping off the mascara, which will easily come off the lashes looking like tiny little cones (instead of giving you that dreaded racoon-eye effect).

Our favorite tubing mascaras

1. Caliray Come Hell or High Water Tubing Mascara

Formulated with 2% argan oil to condition the lashes, Caliray’s Come Hell or High Water Tubing Mascara ($24) simultaneously builds volume, length, and curl. The unique brush features wavy fibers and a defined tip for precise application that stays in place through sweat and oils.

2. Essence Bye Bye Panda Eyes! Tubing Mascara

Some tubing mascaras compromise volume for length, but the Essence Bye Bye Panda Eyes! Tubing Mascara ($4.99) offers users the best of both worlds. The non-clumping formula defines each individual lash and is surprisingly buildable. Best of all, you never have to worry about your mascara melting off and causing that raccoon (or panda!) effect ever again.

3. Em Cosmetics Pick Me Up Volumizing + Lengthening Mascara

If soft, long lashes are your goal, look no further than Em Cosmetics’ Pick Me Up Volumizing + Lengthening Mascara ($24). Rather than weighing down the lashes, the lightweight mascara holds a curl for hours on end, while the specially designed brush is molded to work for all eye shapes and sizes. Plus, the formula is packed with hyaluronic acid, pro-vitamin B, and rice extract to nourish and strengthen lashes.

4. Merit Clean Lash Lengthening Tubing Mascara

For a wide-awake effect, try the Merit Clean Lash Lengthening Tubing Mascara ($26). The formula and brush work in tandem to deliver the perfect amount of product every time—no smudging or clumping in sight. The result is defined, separated lashes for a natural effect.

5. Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara

They’re not lying when they call it liquid lash extensions. Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara ($26) offers unparalleled length and definition, and comes in six different colors. We especially love the brown-black Crystal shade.
