Zach Braff on Why Scrubs Cast Started to Repeat Jokes by Final Season

While Zach Braff said he misses aspects of Scrubs, he admitted the cast was “kind of fried” by the ninth and final season.

The actor-producer-director looked back at filming the Emmy-winning show, which ran from 2001 to 2010, on a recent episode of the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast. He also got candid about the exhaustion the cast felt by the end.

“I miss laughing every day. Belly laughing every day was the job. And when that goes away, by the time nine years were over, we were sort of all exhausted by it,” Braff, who played intern John “J.D.” Dorian on the medical sitcom, explained. “We were starting to repeat jokes. Everyone’s pretty fried.”

The Garden State actor added that the long hours on set played a huge role. “We would do insane hours that people don’t even do anymore,” he said. “We didn’t really have much of a life outside of it. So we were just kind of fried.”

However, nearly 15 years after the series wrapped, Braff is now open to the idea of returning to Sacred Heart Hospital with his former co-stars Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, John C. McGinley and Christa Miller.

“But now looking back, and there’s talk of reboots, and that’s a conversation, I think, ‘Oh my gosh. Being able to laugh — belly laugh — with these people again, would be a lot of fun,’” he said.

But the A Good Person filmmaker noted that while Scrubs “changed my whole life,” there would still need to be some boundaries if the original cast returned for a reboot.

“When we signed up to do our show, they can put you under a pretty insane contract of, like, seven years and stuff, which was… which I wouldn’t do [again],” Braff said. “But some sort of a limited thing? You’re basically saying, ‘Do you wanna go get the gang back together and fucking laugh your ass off with some of your best friends and be paid well?’ Yeah, that sounds amazing!”

The actor added that he had “the most insane life turnaround” because of the hit show, which saw his character learn the ways of medicine, friendship and life.
