2.6 Million Stanley Mugs Are Being Recalled After More Than 35 Confirmed Burn Reports

If you’ve recently purchased a Stanley travel mug, then it’s time to check your cupboard. 

On Thursday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) sent out a recall notice for more than 2.6 billion Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs as its “lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard.”

The recall notice explained that it involves all the Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold in the United States. “The recalled double-walled mugs were sold in a variety of colors, including white, black, and green, in 12-ounce, 16-ounce, and 20-ounce sizes with a polypropylene lid.” The notice added that the product is easily identifiable, as “the Stanley logo appears on the front and bottom of the mug.”

The recalled mugs have one of the following product identification numbers printed on the bottom of the mug: Switchback 12-ounce mug, product identification number 20-01437; Switchback 16-ounce mug, product identification numbers 20-01436, 20-02211; Trigger Action 12-ounce mug, product identification numbers 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825; Trigger Action 16-ounce mug, product identification numbers 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957; Trigger Action 20-ounce mug, product identification numbers 20-02034, 20-02746.  

According to the notice, Stanley has received 91 injury reports worldwide, including 16 in the United States. All the injuries occurred when the travel mugs’ lids detached during use, “resulting in 38 burn injuries worldwide, including two burn injuries in the U.S., with 11 consumers worldwide requiring medical attention.”

The mugs were sold on Amazon.com, as well in retail stores including Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, and others. They were also sold online via Stanley’s website between June 2016 through December 2024, each costing between $20 and $50.

Consumers who purchased one of the recalled mugs should “immediately stop” using them and contact Stanley for a replacement lid.  You can check to see if your product is part of the recall and request a lid at stanley1913tmrecall.expertinquiry.com.
