2024 Olympics medal count: Tracker for how many gold, silver, bronze medals USA, each country has won in Paris
The Star Spangled Banner rang out across Paris on Thursday with Team USA winning four gold medals on its best day of the 2024 Olympics. The Americans entered Day 6 of the games with five golds but nearly doubled that thanks to a series of historic performances.
The U.S. started the day with a surprising gold in the men’s four rowing, its first since 1960. Nicholas Mead, Justin Best, Michael Grady and Liam Corrigan pushed things into high gear late and beat New Zealand by under a second.
Then came a gold that was more expected but extremely stirring nonetheless. Simone Biles overcame an up-and-down start to capture her second gymnastics all-around gold medal. She also won in 2016, and Matt Norlander says she’s among the greatest athletes ever, regardless of sport. Suni Lee captured bronze in the event as well.
Then came another stunner: women’s team foil (fencing) won gold for the first time ever.
Also topping the podium was Kate Douglass (200-meter breaststroke). Douglass wasn’t the only U.S. success in the pool. Katie Ledecky took silver in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay, giving her 13 career Olympic medals, most ever by a female swimmer.
Those results — plus Regan Smith’s women’s 200-meter butterfly silver — give the United States a Paris Games-best 37 total medals, 10 ahead of France, which is in second. The Americans’ nine golds are second behind China’s 11.
The United States entered the 2024 Games with the most medals ever won in the Summer Olympics. The U.S. also holds the record for most gold medals won in a single games with 83 captured in 1984, one of the country’s host years that took place as the Soviet Union led a 12-nation boycott of the Los Angeles Games. Such lofty totals will not happen this year. In Paris, America is simply looking to build upon the success that it had three years ago where the U.S. brought home 39 gold medals, 41 silvers and 33 bronze.
