6 Top Home Design Trends for 2025, According to Real Simple Editors
2025 is coming in hot, and for us REAL SIMPLE home editors who stare at beautiful spaces all day, a few big trends are emerging in the decor space for the new year. We’re excited about these because many of them are about color (more of it), but also about making your space more unique, more you. These trends are all about adding more personality to your home and moving away from the super-minimalist look that’s been so popular over the last few years. Making your home feel lived-in, intentional, and beautiful is the name of the game.
Here are a few trends we’ve been seeing all over the place to inspire your next project!
Unique Mirrors
We have seen no shortage of statement mirrors making their way into some of our favorite designers’ work lately, like this space by Megan Gorelick Interiors. Although they’re not always inexpensive, a unique mirror is a great way to bring personality into your home.
Mix and Match Bedding
Gone are the days of matchy-matchy bedding. It’s time to have fun with your sheets and pillows by playing around with different patterns and textures, as seen in this bedroom by Collected Interiors, to create a bed that you won’t mind making in the morning. Switch up accessories like throw pillows and blankets when the seasons change for a mini refresh—it’ll keep you from getting bored with your bedding!
“Random” Tile Patterns
If you’ve been noticing tile arrangements on backsplashes and in bathroom showers and walls that are seemingly…random (not in a discernible pattern), you’re not alone. We’ve been seeing it done in subtle ways, like in this kitchen by Cece Bowman Interiors, and in bolder ways, like Hema Persad’s bathroom in the 2024 Real Simple Home! We love that this feels both intentional and organic, and is a little looser than traditional patterns.
Colorful Accent Furniture
It’s no secret that brighter colors have crept back onto the scene after a few years of the minimalist, all-beige-everything aesthetic. And while adding a throw pillow or accessory to test out a brighter shade is practical if you’re color-shy, we’re seeing bold colors more often on accent furniture, like this fun cabinet by Mustard Made (this cherry-colored piece goes hand in hand with the Unexpected Red Theory!). This is a fun trend, because it’s easy to try out by just upcycling something you already have that needs a bit of a refresh, like painting an old wooden chair to make it more special.
Sophisticated Shades of Purple
Purple used to be a somewhat contentious color in the design community, but it has recently seen a resurgence. Just search for inspo on IG or Pinterest, and you’ll find tons of gorgeous spaces that incorporate the prettiest refined shades of purple. We’re seeing lots of lilac with a slightly dusty hue (like this cabinet in a space designed by Norton Interiors), and rooms painted deep, dramatic plums, aubergines, and more. Still a little apprehensive? Try out a smaller accessory like a throw, wastebasket, or frame, and see how you like it.
Statement Hardware
While we’re still all for classic hardware, adding some that are colorful, a unique shape, or oversized scale can add interest to a piece of furniture/cabinets or anywhere else you want to add a little extra pizzazz without undergoing a complex, time-consuming DIY project. We’re enamored with this bathroom designed by Jessica Davis of Atelier Davis, with special hardware by her line, Nest Hardware.
