8 Quick and Easy Hairstyles for Busy Mornings
Getting ready in the morning is already hectic enough—and that’s if you didn’t press snooze too many times. When you find yourself in the midst of a rush, don’t feel like you have to resort to a plain pony or haphazard topknot. We asked hairstylists to share their favorite effortless hairstyles for easy mornings so you can walk on that door looking and feeling great—and on time. From a pretty pony to an undone bun, put these ideas in your back pocket for the next time you need a quick ‘do.
1. Fluffy Pony
A ponytail can quickly go sideways if it doesn’t feel intentional, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend an hour curling your strands. “I love this pony technique because it’s polished yet effortless,” says Maria McCool, hairstylist and founder of Calista. “Ponies shouldn’t just be a get-out-of-doing-your-hair card you pull when things get busy. A properly dressed pony says ‘I’m confident, I’m stylish, and I’m fun.’”
To recreate this look, add some soft waves with a large barrel curling iron, or simply fluffy up your existing curls from the previous day using a little dry shampoo. Pull your hair back into a sleek, high ponytail, then fluff up the ends with some texturizing spray.
2. Claw Clip Assist
When in doubt, keep a claw clip on your person at all times. There are a ton of different ways you can use claw clips for easy, effortless hairstyles. Take some inspiration from this twisted ‘do. Pull your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck (but no need to secure it), then, working upward, twist your hair until about half of it’s twisted like a rope. Create a soft twist shape, as pictured, then secure with a claw clip at the bottom allowing for hair to fall through the bottom. A flower shape was used here, but you’ve got your pick of many styles.
3. Glossy Curls
One of the quickest ways to save time on your hair in the morning is lean into your natural texture versus fighting it. “I like the creative freedom of accepting your curls are not meant to be all uniform and allowing your hair to have a little personality,” says Lacy Redway, celebrity hairstylist and Nexxus brand ambassador. “This style is about accepting the spontaneity of its shape, not being afraid to try new shapes, and focusing more on learning how to hydrate and protect it.”
Apply anti-frizz gel or cream to wet strands, then wrap sections around your fingers to help shape and guide your natural curls, Redway says. Allow your hair to air-dry or use a diffuser. Finish with a medium-hold hairspray.
4. Voluminous Bun (2 Ways)
You can wear this easy hairstyle two different ways—either as a bun at the nape of your neck or a half-up hairdo. Pull hair into an upside down ponytail (either half or full) as pictured, then wrap your hair back down over the nub. Secure with your elastic, then pull hair gently to create as much volume as possible. You may need a few bobby pins and some flexible hold hairspray to keep everything in place through the day.
5. Simple ‘S’ Wave
When we think of easy hairstyles, wearing hair up may seem like a natural move. You can still wear your strands down and not worry about putting a ton of effort into the look.
“This style is fast and effortless for those who want a quick wave in their hair, but only have a straightener to work with,” says Joey Scandizzo, celebrity hairstylist and co-creative director of ELEVEN Australia. “Using a straightener, section the hair, then start at the top of the head and slowly move the flat iron down the hair, rotating inwards and then outwards.” Keep the ends straight.
6. Undone Bun
If you’re in need of a quick and easy hairstyle that feels a bit more elevated—perfect for big days at work or a fun brunch with friends—try this look. “I love this messy bun hairstyle tutorial for long hair,” Scandizzo says. “ This look is done, but undone, and adds an element of some textures. Plus, itʼs easy to execute and looks sophisticated without being stuffy.”
Prep hair with a texturizing spray for some grip, then add just a bit of texture with a hot tool—no need to go overboard. Pull your hair into a ponytail, then twist around the base and secure with bobby pins. Don’t get too fussy about pieces falling out; that’s part of the charm.
7. Easiest Pony Ever
When you’re seriously pressed for time—or can’t even deal with spending time on your hair—a pony is the natural choice. Don’t just toss it up and run out the door, though, a simple hair accessory, like this thick gold number or even a bow or bejeweled elastic, can instantly dress up your ‘do. Best of all, this works on all hair textures and medium to long length.
8. Cropped Updo
Yes, short hair can be styled into a chic, effortless updo. It may not look easy at first sight, but McCool says this hairstyle is a perfect example of how an elegant style can take very little of your time to achieve.
First, add some texture to your strands with a flat iron or curling iron. Again, it doesn’t have to be perfect—we just want some dimension. “Fasten the very short hair on the bottom first by twisting each side in and then pin each side using bobby pins,” McCool says. “Gather the top section, twist, and fasten with bobby pins. Be sure to add a little fluff for that effortless style.”
