Chilly temps have finally crept in, and along with those cozy teddy coats and knee-high boots it’s time to switch up your makeup routine. Winter makeup trends for 2025 are all about embracing the chill factor while making a statement. think cold girl makeup with its frosted accents and rosy cheeks, timeless red lipstick, and shimmering metallics that catch the light. Whether you’re going for a cozy après-ski glow or snazzy holiday vibes, these winter makeup trends will have you lit and glowy all season long.
1. Cool Tones
Winter is the perfect time to swap in cooler tones a la cold girl makeup. “Add in cool pinks and some shimmer to make you appear as if you’ve been exposed to a wind chill—in the best apres-ski way possible,” says Drita Paljevic, head makeup artist at Kevyn Aucoin Beauty. “We like making it approachable for everyday wear with a neutral, ‘90s twist on the snow and ice looks that are trending on social media.”
2. Metallic Eyeshadow
On that note, metallic eyeshadow is a definite winter makeup trend for 2025. You don’t want to create a look that’s too dated, though, so subtle application is key.
“Try a softer application for daytime looks and a bolder application for nighttime,” suggests celebrity makeup artist Bryan Cantor. “This could be a sheer wash of metallic eyeshadow for the daytime, compared to a more intense eyeshadow application paired with smudged black eyeliner for some nighttime drama.” He adds that using your metallic eyeshadow to create a winged liner is another great way to incorporate this trend into your routine.
3. Body Highlighter
Over the last decade we’ve seen a trend of tending to skin from the neck down—think sheet masks for your decollete, silky body serums, and retinol body creams. Now, we’re seeing a transition of applying makeup to the body, too. “Being fun and carefree reigns,” says Kate Johnson, an editorial and bridal makeup artist. “Are we feeling the ’90s on a chic level sweep in? Yes, yes I think we are! Hydrate with some coconut oil and powder highlighter on the high points of the body. Try hitting your collar bone, shins, and softly on the cheeks.”
4. Berry and Plum
Not feeling the frigid vibes? Try a warmer color palette via berry and plum shades, which naturally bring warmth to the skin and still feel of the season! “These colors are bold but keep the frosted winter look soft and wearable without overpowering your makeup look,” notes Tamara Boyd, professional makeup artist. She especially likes this color on lips. “Line your lips with a lip liner in a matching berry or plum shade to create a defined edge. Then apply berry or plum lipstick, using your finger to dab in the color for a stained effect.”
5. Dewy, Healthy Skin
Healthy skin is always in, but come winter it becomes a bit of an Olympic sport to keep dryness at bay. “With dry winter weather, matte makeup can bring out every wrinkle or imperfection,” Johnson says. “Nothing says youth like an amazing glow.” Layer your skin care with toner, serum, and moisturizer and use a lightweight foundation that lets skin shine through. A hydrating mist can keep things glowy through the day, Johnson adds.
6. Bold Lips with Soft Eyes
It’s no secret that a bold, daring lip is a staple in any rotation of winter makeup looks. “Wearing darker colors means you can be more playful, but it’s still important to strike the right balance and not overdo the eyes,” Paljevic says. “Opt for a more stain or matte eyeshadow in a cream, beige, or very light brown—this gives you the freedom to be brave with your lips!”
7. Red Lipstick
On that note, Cantor predicts that red lips will trend all winter long. “Though they are a classic go-to for the holiday season, the runways all indicate that we will see red lips for winter 2024 and into 2025,” he says. “To incorporate this trend into your routine, choose a red that complements your skin tone. If you have cool undertones, reach for a red with more blue in it. If you have warm undertones, a yellow-red will be more flattering for you. If you have neutral undertones, any red will suit your complexion.”
8. Frosted Skin
If dewy skin isn’t really your thing, maybe you’ll be more into the frosted skin look. “Think cool-toned, icy highlighters with an ethereal glow,” Boyd says. “To achieve this look, start with a moisturizing primer to create a smooth base. Then use a lightweight skin tint with a natural radiant finish to get the radiant glowing effect. Once thatʼs applied go in with a cool-toned highlighter—silver or icy pink—to create a frosted glow.” Apply to the high points of your face, including cheekbones, brow bones, nose bridge, and cupid’s bow.
