850,000 Popular Water Bottles Sold at Walmart Recalled After Reports of Permanent Vision Loss

If you bought a water bottle from Walmart within the past eight years, you’ll want to check this recall very carefully. Nearly a million water bottles sold under the brand name Ozark Trail were just recalled due to a risk of serious injury, according to a news release from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. So far, three people have reported injuries—including permanent eye damage and vision loss—after the lid forcefully ejected from the water bottle and hit them in the face.

The impacted bottles are Ozark Trail 64-ounce Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles, with a model number 83-662. (Unfortunately, the model number only appears on the packaging, not the water bottle itself.) The bottles are silver with a black, screw-on lid. They measure 4.41 x 4.41 x 11.5 inches, and have the Ozark Trail logo on the side of the bottle.

They have been sold at Walmart since 2017, and retail for $15.

The caps of the impacted water bottles have forcefully ejected from the bottles unexpectedly. It’s more likely for this to happen when the bottles are filled with carbonated beverages or perishable liquids like juice and milk, and have been left over time.

If you have one of the impacted bottles, you should stop using it immediately and return it to Walmart for a full refund.
