9 Fall Makeup Trends That Look Good on Everyone

When the weather shifts from warm to cold, you switch up your apparel—out with the tanks, in with the cable knits—but it’s also the perfect reason to experiment with your makeup. This season, we’re seeing a sweeping range of fall makeup trends, from Scandi beauty with its pink, frosty cheeks and lips to lived-in makeup with dark and saturated tones. For some inspiration, we asked makeup artists to share the fall makeup trends they’re especially loving this season.

1. Autumn Berry Blush

Blush is one of those makeup items that deliver tons of payoff, even when you go in with a light hand. This season, makeup artist and content creator Victoria Lynn says rouge is all about berry hues. Try it alone, or create an ombré effect with nude, orange, and berry.

“Start with the deepest shade placed highest on the cheek bone and layer the lightest shades downward onto the apples of the cheek,” she says. “If you don’t have multiple blush shades you can always use your favorite lipsticks to substitute. The sunset blush wave fueled this trend as it’s the same technique but with autumnal tones.”

2. Scandi Makeup

The Scandi makeup trend has taken off just in time for the colder months. This bright, fresh-faced spin on the no makeup-makeup look is all about looking super hydrated, refreshed, and kissed by a chill in the air. “The goal is looking like a natural beauty and keeping makeup minimal and natural,” says Aimee Carr, makeup artist and founder of Voodoo Makeup. Key pillars of this makeup look are hydrated, healthy skin, a bit of bronzer, icy white highlighter, and pink lips and cheeks.

3. Full Ombré Lips

Ombré lips are a makeup look that blends two lip shades with a penciled outline in brown. It is very ‘90s, and it is very in for fall 2024 makeup. “This brown-to-any-shade-of red look is perfect for people who want a natural, fuller-looking lip,” says Michele Probst, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Worth Beauty Company.

4. PSL Invasion

Make no apologies about your pumpkin spice love this season. The “PSL makeup” trend is all about incorporating nostalgic autumn hues onto your face. “You know fall has arrived when warm tones are taking over again,” Lynn says. “I love this trend because it’s a traditional autumn color palette that feels so warm and cozy. You can go bold with a pumpkin spice smokey eye or even a burnt orange lip.”

5. Jewel Tone Lashes

While warm tones a la cinnamon and orange are perennial favorites, jewel tones are another must for autumn. This season, we’re seeing these bold, gemstone-inspired hues make their way onto eyelids and lashes. “I am seeing a huge makeup moment for colored lashes that bleed into the liner,” says Samreen Arshad, professional makeup artist. “The popularity of colorful lashes is also driven by fashion runways and celebrity culture, with models showcasing bold lash hues.”

6. Grunge Espresso

Shades of brown are in, as evidenced by the grungy espresso makeup trip we’re seeing this fall. “It’s your everyday brown eyeshadow, but bump up the intensity times three,” Lynn says. “Don’t be afraid to swipe on a little more eyeliner and smudge it out onto the lower lash line; this trend is fueled by high fashion runway looks, but mostly the brat beauty wave. Charli XCX is constantly rocking an espresso eye and she inspires me to wear this look more!”

7. Lived-In, Smoky Eyes

Falling alongside the grunge espresso fall makeup trend is a general embracement of “messy” beauty looks. A lived-in smoky eye is the perfect way to achieve this. “This trend showcases intentional eye makeup with smoky winged liner and tightlining, resulting in a dramatic yet effortlessly elegant effect,” Arshad says. “The trend right now is being bold and expressive. The smoky eye has always been a cult favorite for expression!”

8. Dark Lipstick

What better time of the year to swipe on some moody lipstick than autumn? From velvety orchid to rich reds, don’t hold back on saturation this season. “I love pops of color on the face, and a bold dark lipstick is a great way to achieve this look and be right on trend for fall,” Carr says. “We’re seeing lots of deep reds and browns, as it’s a fun way to play with color and stay right on trend with the season.”

9. Illuminating Primers

Glowy, healthy skin is always in, but it becomes a bit trickier to pull off once cold weather sets in. Illuminating primers can help solve the issue of a dull complexion real quick. “Illuminating primers blur imperfections and boost the radiance of foundation,” Probst says. “It helps achieve smooth skin texture and long-lasting makeup. I love using a primer if I’m wearing makeup to go out, or for a client going out. It allows your skin to look and feel dewy.”
