Beetlejuice 2’s New Trailer Reveals An Unlikely Partnership

Typically, sequels arrive shortly after the original movie and not 36 years later. But Beetlejuice 2, officially titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, plays by its own rules. Director Tim Burton is reuniting with original Beetlejuice stars Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, who played the title character and Lydia Deetz, respectively. Now, the new trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is revealing why Lydia had to summon Beetlejuice herself nearly four decades after she last encountered him.

Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega is playing Lydia’s teenage daughter, Astrid Deetz, and she doesn’t believe in the supernatural or buy that her mom can speak to and hear the dead, which is an ability that Lydia picked up during the first film. However, when Astrid is kidnapped and taken into the afterlife, Beetlejuice is the only one that Lydia can turn to in order to get her daughter back.

Of course, Beetlejuice’s favors always come with a price. And it looks like the Ghost with the Most has gotten some bureaucratic power in the afterlife since we last saw him. Beetlejuice tried to marry Lydia in the first movie in order to fully escape from the afterlife. If the trailer’s church scene is any indication, that may be Beetlejuice’s plan again even though he already has a wife, Delores, as played by Monica Bellucci.

Ryder recently revealed that she and Burton have been meeting for decades about a potential Beetlejuice 2. She even had a provision in her Stranger Things contract that allowed her to shoot Beetlejuice 2 if it happened, which it finally did during a hiatus between seasons.

Catherine O’Hara is also reprising her role from the first movie as Delia Deetz. The rest of the cast includes Justin Theroux as Rory, and Willem Dafoe as Wolf Jackson. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will haunt theaters on September 6.
