Hunter Schafer is recalling the time when she had to tell her pastor parents about her self-harm and sex scenes in Euphoria, and it was quite awkward, to say the least.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes actress recently said on the Call Her Daddy podcast that her parents’ church is “on the chiller side of Christianity,” but she still felt “bad” about the explicit and disturbing scenes.
“There’s this whole pastor’s daughter trope. And it gets kind of tough,” Schafer admitted.
The two scenes in particular that were the hardest to share included her 17-year-old character Jules having rough anal sex with 40-something Cal (Eric Dane) and then when she self-harms at a party in front of Nate (Jacob Elordi).
“When I had to tell my parents, ‘In the first episode, I’m having anal sex with a 45-year-old and cutting myself in the arm,’ my first thought is like, OK, they have to tell their congregation that their kid’s going to be on TV,” Schafer explained to host Alex Cooper. “And then their congregation, who are just little old nice white Christian people from the south, are going to watch this TV show and see me getting butt fucked. I still do feel bad because that’s something they still have to deal with.”
Schafer is expected to return for season three of Euphoria, which is set to begin filming in January 2025. However, the hit HBO show has been hit with tragedy and trauma since the 2022 season two premiere, leaving fans concerned whether a third season was even going to happen.
“We have no fucking idea what’s going on,” the Cuckoo star said in regards to what fans can expect following the show’s three-year hiatus. “You can ask literally all of the cast. The real tea is that a lot has happened.”
However, Schafer confessed that either way, it’s “going to be tough” going back to set following Angus Cloud’s death in 2023. He played drug dealer Fez for two seasons.
“I think there’s a world in which we can channel that into making it a beautiful season three — if it is supposed to happen,” she tearfully added. “I think that shit really threw everyone for a loop.”
