Drew Barrymore Will ‘Practice Physical Distance’ With Talk Show Guests

Drew Barrymore has one thing she wants to work on going into her daytime talk show’s upcoming season: giving her guests more personal space.

The actress recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight after it was announced that The Drew Barrymore Show scored a season six renewal ahead of its Sept. 9 return. In the interview, she explained why she finds herself getting physically up close and personal when interacting with her guests.

“Well, I’ll try to practice physical distance, which is not my strong point,” Barrymore admitted. “Do you know how hard the [COVID-19] pandemic was for me? I was alone in a studio by myself! I like to be around people!”

While the Charlie’s Angels actress acknowledged it’s “not everyone’s favorite” part of her interviews, to which she’s “sorry to those people,” she explained that she’s always aiming to bring “joy and laughter” to her guests and viewers.

“I think that, first of all, we’re always gonna be big on joy and laughter and feeling good, and that was something I always wanted to do,” Barrymore said. “But I never thought we would launch in a pandemic, and trying to lean into the joy and the feel good and the comedy at that time was real weird and wacky.”

The renewal will take the show through the 2025-26 season, Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures, announced earlier this week.

“Drew is a one-of-a-kind talent who is an integral part of the CBS and Paramount family,” McMahon wrote in a statement. “This early renewal and upgrades are a testament to our commitment to The Drew Barrymore Show and its loyal audience, who tune in every day to see Drew’s warmth, inquisitiveness and spontaneity.”
