Alec Baldwin returned to “Saturday Night Live” for the first time since 2020 — but not for his famous Donald Trump impression.
He played Fox News’ Bret Baier on the Oct. 19 episode of the late night comedy series, spoofing the anchor’s recent interview with vice president Kamala Harris, who is being played by Maya Rudolph throughout Season 50.
“The pleasure is neither of ours,” Rudolph said as she sat down with Baldwin after being introduced.
As Baier, Baldwin began: “When I interviewed President Trump, my first question was, ‘What do you think is the most important issue facing our nation?’ So my first question for you is, ‘Give me the exact number of murderers you let loose in this country.’”
The two proceeded to bicker and speak over each other as Baier and Harris did in the real interview on Wednesday. “May I please finish?” Rudolph asked. “I’m asking you to,” said Baldwin. Rudolph shot back: “Well, then, you have to listen,” to which Baldwin responded: “Well, I can’t, because I’m talking.” Exasperated, Rudolph asks, “Well, when will you stop?” The bit ended with Baier saying, “Maybe when I go to bed.”
As Harris, Rudolph then bragged on her record of prosecuting international cartels: “If I was in ‘Breaking Bad,’ it would have ended in three episodes.”
During the real-life interview, after Harris referenced Trump’s recent controversial comments about using the American military on the “enemy within,” “Special Report” aired a clip of Trump that excluded the comment. (Baier later apologized for the error.) In the “SNL” sketch, Baldwin’s Baier did the same thing, rolling clips of Trump (played by James Austin Johnson) saying he’s “been investigated more than Alfonse Capone” and dancing to “YMCA.”
“He can dance all he wants to YMCA or to any other song he doesn’t realize is a gay anthem,” Rudolph said.
Throughout the sketch, Baldwin’s Baier continued to try stepping on the VP’s toes. When he accused Rudolph’s Harris of dissing Trump supporters — “Are they morons? Slack-jaws? Stump-humpers? Cross-eyed meatheads?” she responded, “You’re trying real hard to make me say something bad!”
“Bret, let’s move on,” Rudolph said after Baldwin suggested she thought Trump supporters were fat. “So you’re not denying that they’re fat?” he responds, prompting her to cry, “Oh, my dear god!”
“You’re very sexy when you’re angry, you know that?” Baldwin told her, prompting wide laughter from the audience, which doubled when Rudolph replied, “Yes, I do.”
Next, the sketch riffed on Harris’ comments about how her presidency would differ from Joe Biden’s. “I have watched Joe Biden from the Oval Office to the Situation Room,” Rudolph said when asked about Biden’s mental state, pronouncing the president’s name like “J’Biden.”
“And J’Biden is j’bright, he is j’brilliant, but my presidency will j’basically j’be j’billion times j’better,” she continued. “We’re very different. For example, I’m comfortable saying the word ‘abortion.’”
Baldwin shuddered as she said the word, and continued to convulse as Rudolph said “uterus” and “menstruation” — then tried to get her back by saying “balls,” though she remained stoic.
Baldwin began to wrap up the interview, asking Rudolph to share why the American people should vote for her, but cutting her off repeatedly to prevent her from giving an answer. With a sigh, Rudolph said, “Before I go, can I just say the thing I’ve been trying to say this whole time? Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”
