‘The Librarians’ and PEN America to Be Awarded Grants at Sundance
Scarecrow Video has named Jonathan Marlow as executive director. The Scarecrow archive of more than 150,000 physical film and television items makes it one of the largest publicly-accessible physical media libraries in the world
“Scarecrow Video is not just a place or a collection of movies, it is another portal to home. In our search for a new Executive Director, we needed to find someone who not only has the skills necessary to help us navigate the challenging times facing all nonprofits but also someone who truly understands the special nature of this institution. The Board is thrilled that Jonathan Marlow has returned down the yellow brick road to Scarecrow,” said Lacey Leavitt Gray, Board President of Scarecrow Video.
Scarecrow launched a fundraising effort in 2024 to keep the nonprofit alive and preserve public access to its collection, raising over $1 million to help the archive stay in its Seattle location through at least 2026. Marlow was previously involved with Scarecrow efforts and created the Sanctuary 16mm cinema and events such as the Masters of Animation Festival.

‘The Librarians’ and PEN America Awarded Grants From Subject Matter
Subject Matter, a nonprofit that supports socially conscious documentaries and organizations that address the issues portrayed in those films, will give a $25,000 grant during the Sundance Film Festival to “The Librarians,” a film by Kim A. Snyder and another grant of the same amount to PEN America.
“The Librarians,” which has its world premiere at Sundance, chronicles librarians’ fight against book bans in the U.S. PEN America works to document book bans and censorship.
“Our film gives voice to the community of courageous librarians selflessly fighting to uphold our first amendment rights and the principles of their profession,” Snyder said in a statement. “This unique grant is critical to our efforts in launching ‘The Librarians’ impact campaign at our Sundance premiere. We are thrilled to be partnering with Pen America to bring together our librarian collaborators with notable banned authors nationwide.”
Snyder will participate in a Subject Matter-hosted panel discussion at Sundance, along with Maria Cuomo Cole, Carolyn Foote and Jonathan Friedman to talk about the documentary and the issue of book banning. Throughout Sundance, Subject Matter will increase people’s donations toward PEN America’s librarian initiative by $100, up to a total $5,000 contribution.
