7 Home Items Designers Love Buying from Dollar Tree

Decorating a home is rarely cheap, so it’s important to save money whenever possible. One way designers cut corners and save cash is by buying decor from Dollar Tree or their local dollar store. While these stores are great for picking up a variety of items—from cleaning supplies to toys and gadgets—they also offer hidden gems you might not realize are available.

Ready to be surprised by some of the affordable treasures these stores have to offer? Here are 7 home items designers absolutely love buying from Dollar Tree.

Jute Placemats

Interior designer Kate Dawson says dollar stores often have the best prices on those stylish jute placemats that are so on-trend right now. These are especially useful if you’re hosting a dinner party and want to create a chic tablescape on a budget.

Dawson also mentions that these placemats can be used for crafting projects with kids or if you are a DIY enthusiast. “If you don’t want to use them as placemats, these can also easily be spray-painted in fun colors and then hung up as a basket collage on a wall in your house,” she recommends.

Charger Plates

If you’re trying to create a beautiful tablescape, charger plates are an easy addition that can have a huge visual impact. Colleen Bennett of CBB Design Firm says Dollar Tree is a fantastic place to source these items on a budget. “I love buying their tabletop items,” she says. “They have great chargers and things like that for tablescapes.”

Using a charger is a smart way to upgrade plain dinnerware for seasonal celebrations. Opt for red or green chargers during the holiday season and cheerful pastels for the spring.

Keep in mind that inventory can vary from store to store, but you should be able to find at least a few of these items at your local Dollar Tree or a similar chain.

Wall Decals

Does your little one’s room need a fun refresh or a pop of color? Why not add some wall decals to the space? Dawson heads to Dollar Tree first to find the best deals. “There are so many great options for kids’ rooms such as bedrooms and playrooms with the many different decals available at these stores,” she says.

Best of all, because this upgrade is so affordable, you can change them out as your child’s interests evolve.

LED Novelty Lamps

Looking for a sweet deal on trendy decor items for your teen or tween? “Dollar Tree is a great place to find trendy accessories like LED heart lamps, lightning bolt lamps, and more,” Dawson says. These lamps are useful for decorating their desks or makeup vanities. You could also send one to a college student as a useful gift. After all, their dorm might not have the best lighting.

Bookends

Some bookends can be surprisingly pricey, but they really don’t have to be! “We style lots of bookcases, so we’re always looking for stylish bookends that have style but don’t steal the show,” says Dawson. “We’ve found some really good options at dollar stores.”

Small Pots for Plants

Plants make a lovely addition to any room, but the price of planters can really add up. That’s why Dawson likes to get them for a steal at her local dollar store. “Perfect for real or faux succulents, they always have a nice selection of pots that complement each other,” she explains.

While the pots you’ll find are likely plastic and not terracotta, it’s unlikely anyone will notice the difference and plastic pots are far more durable in the long run.

Holiday Decor

Yes, you can spend a fortune on fancy holiday decor, but you really don’t need to, according to Dawson. “These stores always have inexpensive decor for every holiday, especially trees and candles during the holidays,” she says. “You could easily create a beautiful tablescape using only products sourced at a dollar store.”
