Jonathan Joss Murder: Cops Say 'No Evidence' Parks & Rec Star's Death Was A Hate Crime — Ignoring Husband's Claims?!

[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content]

Was Jonathan Joss‘ death a hate crime? Or not?

For those who haven’t heard the tragic news, the beloved actor who voiced John Redcorn on King of the Hill, was murdered. Early reports just said it was a shooting caused by a dispute with a neighbor. But Jonathan’s husband Tristan Kern de Gonzales made clear in an emotional statement that the neighbor’s problem was the fact they were proud gay men. He even said he was shot at as well. It made the whole story so much worse.

Well, the local cops have a different take. The San Antonio Police Department told People on Tuesday they have not been able to confirm a connection between the indigenous star’s murder and his sexuality — despite his husband’s disturbing allegations. A public information officer said:

“Our investigation has found no evidence whatsoever to indicate that the Mr. Joss’s murder was related to his sexual orientation. We take such allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information. Should any new evidence come to light, we will charge the suspect accordingly.”

What about Tristan’s testimony? Is that not evidence??

As we’ve reported, Joss was shot at around 7 p.m. on Sunday. The 59-year-old died on scene. Cops arrested neighbor Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, who was taken into custody after fleeing the scene. The 56-year-old was booked for murder.

On Monday, the Parks and Recreation alum’s husband shared the whole painful story on Facebook. They were at their “former home,” which had burned down months ago, “checking the mail.” It was then they came upon the skeletal remains of their deceased dog, who died in the fire. It made them incredibly emotional, and they were mourning, crying out, when they were attacked by their angry neighbor. He wrote:

“While we were doing this a man approached us. He started yelling violent homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired. Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life.”

He alleged Jonathan “was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other.” And he also accused local authorities of ignoring past complaints about regular harassment in the past, stating that they faced “openly homophobic” harassment from “individuals who made it clear they did not accept [their] relationship.” He explained:

“That home was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire. We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done.”

So we guess we shouldn’t be surprised if the police who ignored harassment claims don’t find evidence this was a hate crime?

Cops have learned more about the incident, though. In a police report obtained by TMZ, authorities claimed the suspect confessed to the brutal killing when picked up by responding officers. He reportedly said:

“I shot him.”

Alvarez was booked into the Bexar County Jail and held on a $200,000 bond, which he posted, per KSAT, though he had not been released yet as of Tuesday morning. They’ve also released his mugshot.

The report also included an eyewitness account of the moments leading up to the shooting. Police stated a woman drove Jonathan from Austin, Texas, to his old home to check his mail. She parked in the driveway and waited in the car while the performer and another passenger went to check on the mail. Presumably Tristan.

Alvarez then allegedly arrived in a car with another individual and confronted Jonathan. Per the report, the men got into a heated argument and the suspect allegedly threatened to shoot — before pulling out a gun and firing it at the Tulsa King alum.

It sounds like no one else has an alternative explanation for the argument. All we’ve heard is from Tristan, who says Alvarez and others were harassing them for being gay. But will that ever be the official version of events?
