For a wine and spirits writer, I am surprisingly a lightweight—usually one and done. But come summer, with the backyard parties and lazy afternoons that turn into long evenings, I yearn to enjoy two or even (gasp!) three drinks over the course of many hours, without getting too buzzed.
Enter low-ABV (alcohol by volume) cocktails. I asked my REAL SIMPLE test kitchen friend Melissa Gray-Streett to create four quaffable cocktails that don’t pack much of a punch. She delivered: These all come in at under 9% ABV. For perspective, a glass of wine is typically between 11% and 14% ABV, and a cocktail is much higher. I’ll drink (a couple) to that!
Frozen Garibaldi
Greg DuPree; Food Stylist: Emily Nabors Hall; Prop Stylist: Julia Bayless
This is essentially a grown-up slushy and super easy to make. Just blend up Campari, orange juice, lemon juice, and a bit of sugar with ice for a delicious frozen concoction that will please any Negroni-lover. The ABV? Just 4.5%.
Pineapple-Beer Cocktail
Greg DuPree; Food Stylist: Emily Nabors Hall; Prop Stylist: Julia Bayless
Divide one 12-ounce can of beer between four cocktails, stir in some ginger beer (or ale), lime juice, and pineapple juice, and you’ll get this thirst-quenching cocktail with a cute ABV of 2.5%. That’s barely more than a kombucha!
Fresh Raspberry Honey Deuce
Greg DuPree; Food Stylist: Emily Nabors Hall; Prop Stylist: Julia Bayless
The Honey Deuce is the official cocktail of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, held in New York City in late summer. We’ve lightened up this recipe by swapping the proportions of lemonade and vodka and using fresh raspberries instead of raspberry liqueur. The ABV is only 7%.
Cucumber-Basil Ranch Water
Greg DuPree; Food Stylist: Emily Nabors Hall; Prop Stylist: Julia Bayless
Ranch water is a less sugary, easy-drinking alternative to a margarita, and it’s typically made with tequila, lime juice, and Topo Chico. This version reduces the tequila, increases the sparkling water, keeps the lime, and adds flavor via cucumber and basil. Summer cocktails don’t get much more refreshing than this, and the ABV is only around 8%. Cheers!
