Reese Witherspoon Just Shared Her Must-Have Smoothie—and It’s Surprisingly Easy to Make

If you need inspiration for a new, nutrient-packed smoothie, look no further than Reese Witherspoon. The Big Little Lies star, who is fresh off a European vacation, just shared her go-to smoothie recipe. Unsurprisingly, the hearty green drink is packed with fresh fruits, vegetables, and other healthy ingredients.
Witherspoon whipped up her smoothie in a video she posted on Instagram on July 14. The clip opens in the Oscar winner’s kitchen, with a bag of fresh greens, a green apple, a banana, and a lemon resting on a cutting board beside a knife. In a comment, Witherspoon clarified that her smoothie gets its vibrant green hue from a combination of spinach, romaine lettuce, and celery.
“My must-have when I’ve been traveling, eating pizza, pasta, and gelato for seven days,” the actress wrote in the clip. Then, she threw everything in her blender (presumably after removing the necessary peels and cores) and blended the mixture until it was bright green and smooth.
Once the smoothie was done, Witherspoon poured it into a cup, grabbed a bright yellow straw, then shared a photo of herself about to enjoy the finished drink. “It’s all about balance, right?” the star mused in the caption.
Thanks to the spinach, Witherspoon’s smoothie is packed with folate, iron, and vitamins A and K, among other vitamins and minerals. The green apple adds plenty of fiber, while the banana brings potassium, and the lemon contributes powerful antioxidants, such as flavonoids. The Legally Blonde star likely also added some ice or liquid to the smoothie, such as water, coconut water, or milk, in an effort to achieve that smooth, creamy texture.
Given that this smoothie has Witherspoon’s seal of approval, it’s no surprise that her social media followers like it, too. “Looks delicious. Greens are good for you,” one wrote. Another added: “Your green smoothie is my favorite!”
Witherspoon shared her recipe for a very similar smoothie back in 2020. That nutritious drink had all of the aforementioned ingredients, as well as half a cup of coconut water, a whole pear, and an optional dollop of almond butter. “This is the smoothie that I drink every single day,” she said at the time, noting that she has started her day with this drink for the past nine years. “I have this instead of breakfast—around 10 or 11 o’clock in the morning—and then I’m not hungry again at all until 1 o’clock.”
That recipe is as follows:
- 2 heads romaine lettuce, roughly chopped
- ½ cup spinach
- ½ cup coconut water
- 1 whole banana, sliced
- 1 whole apple (sliced, core removed)
- 1 whole pear (sliced, core removed)
- 1 whole lemon (rind removed)
- Celery (optional)
- Almond butter (optional)
According to Witherspoon, she initially heard of this recipe from her Little Fires Everywhere co-star Kerry Washington, who credited her glowing skin, healthy hair, and strong nails to the beverage.
