Uzumaki Anime Limited Edition Steelbook Is Up For Preorder

For decades, Junji Ito has been considered the gold standard for horror manga. The Stephen King of the genre, the Japanese illustrator weaves terrifying tales with horrifically mesmerizing art, and the anime adaptation of his legendary Uzumaki series releases on Blu-ray September 9 in two different editions, including the Limited Edition Steelbook shown below.

Uzumaki

Priced at $35, this edition of the anime comes in an eye-catching steelbook case that perfectly capture’s Ito’s art and the terrifying power of spirals. Uzumaki is also getting a standard edition Blu-ray for $20.

If you’ve never read the original manga, Uzumaki is an internationally renowned horror series that takes place in a town where everything is turning into spirals and the local populace have started losing touch with reality. Caught in the middle of this are Saito and Goshima, who have to find a way to flee the madness that is twisting bodies and minds. The anime adaptation was first announced in 2019, but it was frequently delayed before it was finally broadcast in late 2024.

One of the reasons behind the delays was that the production studio needed more time to faithfully recreate and animate Ito’s incredibly detailed art, and the reception to it was mixed at best. As a companion piece to the manga, it’s serviceable, but the show does suffer from a dip in quality after the admittedly impressive first episode. Perhaps the real horror here is seeing how a beloved manga is adapted for widescreen TVs.

The silver lining here is that the Uzumaki anime is a great advertisement for the far superior manga. You can pick this up for relatively cheap, as Amazon has the complete saga available in a hardcover deluxe edition format for $20 (was $35). The 3-in-1 Deluxe Edition features 648 pages of groundbreaking horror that has stood the test of time.

Uzumaki isn’t the only Junji Ito manga with a budget-friendly Deluxe Edition. The 752-page hardcover Tomie omnibus is on sale for only $19 (was $25). Tomie is a series of stories about a woman cursed with a beauty that makes men fall in love with her and compels them to murder (usually her). In Gyo, which is available in a 2-in-1 Deluxe Edition, Ito spins a disturbing and consistently surprising tale about a sea monster and other oddities.

Multiple upcoming story collections by Ito are available to preorder at Amazon, too. Moan will be out in October, and this offers six stories across 272 pages in a hardcover format. In March 2026, Ito’s story collection Statues will hit store shelves. This 328-page book includes 10 horror and suspense stories. From a macabre tale of an art teacher who creates headless statues to a strange disease that makes girls more beautiful before they succumb to it, this sounds like classic Ito.
