After Barbie Win, Billie Eilish Recalls Sobbing at Matilda

After making history at the 2024 Oscars, Billie Eilish has come a long way from feeling envious of the young performers she watched a decade ago in a stage production of Matilda the Musical.

While backstage at the Academy Awards press room with brother Finneas O’Connell after the pair prevailed for best original song for her Barbie hit “What Was I Made For?,” Eilish was asked if she has advice for young aspiring creatives. Eilish and O’Connell, who co-wrote the number for the Warner Bros. smash, are uniquely equipped to provide pointers for achieving success at an early age, given that they are now the youngest two-time Oscar winners after topping the same category in 2022 for their song “No Time to Die.”

“I would say don’t do it for other people — don’t do it for numbers,” Eilish told reporters Sunday after her big moment. “Moving forward, I want everyone to be doing something that they feel passionate about and they feel proud of and that makes them feel like the best version of themself.”

The 22-year-old performer went on to encourage young musicians to be patient and then recalled feeling behind her peers when she attended a performance of Matilda the Musical a decade ago.

“I remember being 12 and seeing Matilda the Musical and sobbing my eyes out because I was like ‘Damn, I’m a failure. I don’t even have a career,’” said Eilish, eliciting laughter from attendees in the room. “I was bawling from the back in the nosebleeds and I was like, ‘I’m never going to amount to anything because I’m not in Matilda.’ I would just say give yourself some time and do what you love. I know that’s kind of easier said than done because some of us don’t really know what we love.”

During her acceptance speech for what would be Barbie’s lone Oscar, Eilish dedicated the award to “everyone who was affected by the movie and how incredible it is.” Prior to their win, Eilish and O’Connell performed the song with an orchestra during the ceremony that was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
