Last night’s episode may have been hosted by “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “Goodrich” star Michael Keaton with musical guest Billie Eilish, but it was none other than “Saturday Night Live” favorite Alec Baldwin who stole the show right from the top. Spoofing the VP Harris interview on Fox News earlier this week, Baldwin played host Brett Baier against Maya Rudolph’s Kamala and brought the house down with his spot-on skewering of the Republican pundit. From his uncanny valley appearance to his aggressive, interruptive interview style, Baldwin captured Baier’s trademark chauvinism with aplomb and brought even more star power to the already glittering “SNL 50.”
“Now, when I interviewed President Trump,” Baldwin as Baier said as he began the skit with Rudolph, “my first question was, what do you think is the most important issue facing our nation? So my first question for you is give me the exact number of murderers you let loose in this country.”
This type of misdirection remained prevalent throughout the cold open, especially as they cut away to different clips of James Austin Johnson as Trump, rambling in town hall interviews and dancing at rallies to music that, Harris points out, has serious homoerotic undertones.
“Look, he can dance all he wants to YMCA or to any other song he doesn’t realize is a gay anthem,” said Rudolph as the VP. “You see this? This election is about contrast. At my rallies, there’s Beyoncé and joy and bathrooms. At his rallies, he won’t pay for the buses and hundreds of elderly people got to walk back to their cars six miles through the desert like an Old Testament Fyre Festival.”
The sketch also included an appearance by Dana Carvey as President Joe Biden. As Baier tries to make a point about Biden not supporting Kamala in her campaign for the presidency by cutting to misleading clips of him talking about Hurricane Milton and “Joker: Folie à Deux,” VP Harris is quick to acknowledge her admiration for him, but also set herself apart.
“I have watched Joe Biden from the Oval Office to the Situation Room, and Joe Biden is Joe-bright. He is Joe-brilliant. But my presidency will basically be Joe-billion times better.”
