‘American Vandal’ Directors’ Multiverse Thriller

Emmy-nominated directors and “American Vandal” co-writers Kevin and Matthew McManus are back at SXSW with a revenge thriller that calls to mind another filmmaking duo: The Daniels.
The McManus brothers co-wrote and co-directed “Redux Redux,” an action film that spans various multiverses. That dash of Daniels’ Best Picture-winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once” could make “Redux Redux” one of the buzziest titles at SXSW 2025 (where “Everything Everywhere All at Once” also premiered, mind you).
The official synopsis for “Redux Redux” reads: “In an attempt to avenge her daughter’s death, Irene Kelly travels through parallel universes, killing her daughter’s murderer over and over again. She grows addicted to the revenge streak, putting her own humanity in jeopardy.”
Michaela McManus (Kevin and Matthew’s sister, and their frequent star) leads the film, along with supporting turns from Stella Marcus, Jim Cummings, Taylor Misiak, Grace Van Dien, and Jeremy Holm.
“Redux Redux” is debuting at SXSW as a sales title. The McManus duo previously premiered their dark comedy feature “Funeral Kings” at the festival in 2012. Kevin and Matthew McManus told IndieWire in an interview at the time that they have always aspired to be filmmakers.
“We got addicted to filmmaking during 5th or 6th grade,” the brothers said. “It was after a couple of school projects that we asked our dad if we could bring his camcorder to our best friend’s house. He was cool with it, as long as we were really careful… it didn’t take long for us to drive it into the ground. We filmed so much that it completely stopped working.”
The duo further cited the influence of playwright Martin McDonagh on their filmography. “We were reading a lot of plays by Martin McDonagh at the time,” they said in 2012. “He finds the perfect blend of dark humor, believable characters, and a compelling storyline.”
Kevin and Matthew McManus previously helmed 2020 horror film “The Block Island Sound,” which also starred their “Redux Redux” lead actress Michaela McManus.
Kevin and Matthew McManus were writers and producers on the beloved scripted anthology series “American Vandal,” which used the template of true-crime documentaries to fictionalize real-life stories. The Netflix series was canceled after two seasons in 2018. “American Vandal” garnered a Peabody Award and an Emmy nomination, and was among IndieWire’s Best TV Shows of 2017. Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda co-created the show.
“Redux Redux” premieres Saturday, March 8 at SXSW. XYZ Films is handling North American sales and Blue Finch Films handling international sales. Check out the teaser, an IndieWire exclusive, below.
