John Cena’s Agents Told Him Not to Do ‘Barbie’ Cameo

The actor recently told Howard Stern that his reps worried the cameo might take him out of consideration for leading roles

Ken only has a great day if Barbie looks at him, and John Cena almost missed his chance to have Barbie look at him. The actor’s agents advised him not to take a cameo in last year’s blockbuster Barbie, telling him they thought it might diminish his opportunities for leading roles in future films.

Cena recently told Howard Stern how he was filming Fast X at the same studio as Barbie. He’d read the script and wanted to be in it, but his team thought it wasn’t a good look. Then Margot Robbie approached him. “Margot was like, ‘We’ll make you a mermaid,’” Cena recalled. “‘You’ll be in it for half a day.’ Yeah, sure. But I think the perspective from an agency standpoint was, ‘This is beneath you,’ which I get that. But also to the agency’s credit, immediately, they acquiesced, and I was like, ‘No, we’re going to do it,’ but all they can do is offer their guidance.

“They’re not ultimately making the choice,” he continued. “And their guidance is, [the] truly trickledown economics from this may take you out of these lead lap slots.’ And I get all that. I’ve always operated under the philosophy that good work gets you another chance.”

Ultimately, Cena’s scene was pretty short but funny. In it, he is seen greeting Robbie as Barbie and her friends with his fin flapping out of the water. Dua Lipa offers him a “brewski beer,” which he “drinks,” and the gag is worth it just to see him in a flowing blond wig. It was also worth it for Cena since Barbie was the top-grossing film in the world last year.
