Arugula Sold at Publix Recalled Due to Salmonella

If you do your grocery shopping at Publix, you may want to check your latest food haul. According to an announcement from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, Green Life Farms is voluntarily recalling one lot of its 4-ounce containers of Baby Arugula because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The recalled baby arugula was available for sale at select Publix locations from 5/31/24, and has a sell-by date of 6/15/24. Additionally, the product comes in a 4-ounce, clear plastic package marked with the lot code stamped on the top. However, this recall applies only to products marked with Lot #LW15124. While the recalled lettuce was sold at Publix, it’s not clear which Publix stores have been impacted.

Per the FDA, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall to date. Still, shoppers who have purchased the now-recalled baby arugula are urged not to consume it and instead should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

This recall was voluntarily initiated after routine testing conducted by Green Life Farms revealed the presence of Salmonella in a single harvest of its baby arugula. The company took immediate corrective action, and additional harvests are unaffected.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Side effects for those infected with salmonella include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.
