A&W Is Celebrating National Root Beer Day With Free Floats

Get excited, fam. Tuesday is officially National Root Beer Day. While you’re not likely to find a parade or a huge celebration happening in your town, we know where you can at least score free root beer floats — if you’re strong enough to lift one.

A&W is giving away free root beer floats on Tuesday around the country at any participating A&W location between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on August 6. How you get them, however, might seem a little bit strange: you have to show off your muscles.

The chain is asking customers to show off their “Float Flex” to score a free small root beer float. We’re presuming the “Float Flex” is showing off those carpal muscles while you hoist a glass in the air, but the request sounds pretty open-ended, so you do you.

According to A&W, the “Float Flex” campaign “encourages Americans to prepare their bodies for the roughly 3 pounds 5 ounces of Made Fresh Root Beer and creamy vanilla soft serve in a frosty glass mug that make up the massive A&W Root Beer Float.” So start doing those curls now, and don’t forget to stretch before you attempt your flex.

“A&W’s iconic Root Beer Float is without a doubt one of the heaviest drinks in the quick-service restaurant industry,” Liz Bazner, the VP of marketing and innovation at A&W, said in a press release announcing the promotion. “It’s so heavy that we worried we might be missing out on a whole untapped market of folks that simply can’t handle its hugeness. This National Root Beer Float Day, we wanted to get everyone pumped up and ready to enjoy their free float.”

For the promotion, A&W has partnered with a number of social media influencers, including Keith Habersberger of The Try Guys, to get the word out about the freebie.

It’s also created … wait for it … a home exercise kit to assist with training. The kit features a weighted Root Beer Float replica for you to “get your swol on,” along with headbands, wristbands, and more to help float fans pack on muscle before the big day.

And remember, when you stop by to show off those sweet gains at your local A&W Tuesday, as the chain notes, “Brain freeze is just weakness leaving the body.”
