Behind Beyonce’s All-White Cowboy Carter Tour Look

Even after 20+ years in the industry, it’s still impossible not to be awed by anything Beyoncé does. From surprise album drops to fully realized visual albums, she continually reshapes the boundaries of artistry. After the groundbreaking Renaissance tour, which premiered in 2023, she’s now embarking on a new chapter with the second album in the Renaissance trilogy.

Renaissance was a celebration of musical evolution, dance, and artistic expression—ultimately honoring the vibrancy and visibility of Queer culture. The tour closed with a European leg that showcased futuristic aesthetics rooted in Afrofuturism, space odyssey themes, and high-concept fantasy, all brought to life through archival pieces and custom couture crafted specifically for her.

Now, as the Cowboy Carter tour kicks off—premiering just yesterday in Los Angeles, at SoFi Stadium—Beyoncé once again defies expectations. The show featured hits from her new album, nostalgic fan favorites, and even a performance from her daughter Blue Ivy, who delivered a standout dance sequence. But one moment in particular stole the spotlight: Beyoncé’s all-white, cowboy-inspired Mugler ensemble.

Beyoncé opened the show in a notable white Mugler bodysuit, complete with cascading fringe, structured chaps, and a classic cowboy hat. The look was punctuated by a sparkling diamond bolo tie, bringing a refined flair to the costume. Developed in collaboration with stylist and longtime Beyoncé fashion consultant Shiona Turini, the corseted bodysuit featured over 1,700 laser-cut, bonded fringe pieces, an intricate nod to craftsmanship and symbolism.

This look, like many others in her Cowboy Carter tour wardrobe, dives deep into the aesthetic of Black Americana. Through fashion, Beyoncé continues to explore and reclaim the visual language of the Black cowboy, a figure historically marginalized yet essential to American history and culture. Think: her billowy, dramatic, cut-and-sewn American flag dress. The launch of the tour, or the dawn of a new era where Black identity is represented within country music and beyond is seen not only in her production but costuming.

Mugler designs appeared throughout the night, including a rare archival piece from 1992 featured in a tour montage. Beyoncé also dazzled in custom creations by Burberry, Roberto Cavalli, Moschino, and others. While most artists might change outfits two times during a performance, Beyoncé pulled off an impressive nine looks during the nearly three-hour opening show of her 32-stop stadium tour. These elaborate costumes aren’t just fashion statements for her, used to add dramatic flair and extra production to the show, they’re visual extensions shedding light Black pioneers who helped shape country music and rewriting the narrative on who gets to belong in that legacy.
